But mainstreaming is cheaper for the system.
Some parents are in denial and think their kids belong in the regular classroom. Especially, those whose kids are disruptive.
+1
Yes! This! And those parents will try to pin it on anyone. It is so obvious, I feel bad for their child, really. The school admin are not stupid, those parents may wish they were.
Let's be clear about this thread.
FCPS is a s**t show.
They need to redraw boundaries to "spread the wealth".
They are not transparent regarding indiscretions, and negligence.
They treat those that are not LD and AAP like animals.
WHO can we vote for to change this???
You’re out of luck. No one will run on such a platform, which is self-pitying to a fault. That’s not the mindset in the county, or at least among those who vote in School Board elections.
That PP. Crazy. Let's look at redrawing boundaries to spread the wealth. That destroys property values - homes in Dranesville currently slated for Langley are moved to Herndon, for instance, would see a substantial hit in property values, which in turn leads to lower tax assessments, which in turn leads to less money for the County. And think of the optics: Fairfax County decides they want to be a sanctuary county and then hurts their citizens - legal immigrants and Americans - by redistricting to meet their utopian goals.
Transparency should be expected. If a kid is sexually assaulted, for instance, I would expect there to be notification, starting with all the kids in that school. Hiding the sexual molestation tells the molester it's ok and the one molested that no one cares. I was molested outside the schools as a kid and the reason I was able to deal with it is because the person I told did something on my behalf.
I've never seen those that aren't LD and AAP treated like animals and would like some examples. I admit that they are the 'forgotten' though.
You need to vote in more people who believe in individual rights and that all people are created equal. One also has to understand that money is a finite commodity and if the Feds are threatening to withhold funds to push some sort of agenda, that needs to be stated outright to the public by the school board.
Herndon is in Dranesville just like Langley.
When the neighborhoods in western Great Falls are moved back to Herndon, any negative impact on homes in those neighborhoods should be accompanied by a positive impact on the values of other homes in the Herndon district.
If county residents felt that FCPS was engaged in a wholesale revision of boundaries to produce schools with comparable ESOL/FARMS rates, that would have an overall negative effect, because people would perceive that the general assumption that their kids get to attend a school near their homes no longer applies in Fairfax County. However, people would not perceive a shift in the Langley boundaries that way, because the neighborhoods that will move back to Herndon within the next decade are closer to Herndon (and South Lakes) than Langley.
You have NO idea what the problem with your statements are? You are using one set of people to not only fix the issues with another, but have no problem taking wealth from one person to give to another. The city of Herndon decided they were going to become a sanctuary city. The county of Fairfax, similar. Now the city of Herndon is seeing poverty, gang violence, and the decline of their community and want to take the hard-earned wealth of others to solve their problems.
You underestimate that people will not 'perceive a shift' that way, because you are literally stealing from them.
I'd have an issue if this were being considered simply as a means to transfer wealth from Great Falls to Herndon property owners.
But it isn't. It's being previewed now (and it will be implemented later) because FCPS plans to build another high school in western Fairfax, which will necessitate boundary changes. Moving western Great Falls to Herndon will provide those students with a shorter commute to middle and high school and
help ensure that Herndon HS is demographically balanced.
You seem to assume FCPS's obligation is to protect your property values and concentrate poverty in the Herndon schools to send the Town of Herndon (it's a Town, not a City) a message. It has no such obligation. Redrawing the boundaries in that area is entirely within its authority. Nor is it theft,
as the price you paid to live in western Great Falls presumably reflected a discount associated with the possibility that your neighborhood would be redistricted in the future.
There is always some sort of altruistic reason. See the bolded? That's the real reason and the school board members tweet about it. And yes, that sort of 'demographic balancing' will indeed steal from person A and give it to person B.
HERNDON concentrated the poverty in their own TOWN by acting as a sanctuary TOWN (because you insist on parsing that detail as if it matters - just wow!). That's not the problem of any individual in Western Great Falls. And now, the 'discount' you speak so fondly of does not and did not exist. If you think those who live in Western Great Falls will stand for this, you are insane. I have lived in this area going on 30 years now and have watched the decline in Herndon and other areas in Fairfax County due to liberal Fairfax County administrators.
This is a quote from the Twitter feed of a FFX Cty school board member. Care to explain this away?
Pat Hynes:
The school bd and Supt are developing a comprehensive boundary plan,
to serve the goal of diversity above all. We have seismic, historic boundary anomalies across the county - this can no longer be done one or two pyramids at a time, using outdated and largely ignored criteria.
You definitely know how to work yourself up into greater bouts of hysteria with every post.
The real (i.e., primary) reason for the future shift of these neighborhoods from Langley to Herndon is logistical. FCPS has committed to building a new high school in western Fairfax. People have asked for a new high school in that area for years, and it appears FCPS plans to build one. There are plenty of reasons for doing so - schools like Chantilly have over 2800 kids and kids in western Great Falls currently travel long distances to Langley. Other schools like Herndon and South Lakes are closer, but they can't move western Great Falls yet because the other schools don't have sufficient space. That will change with the new high school. Langley parents have complained about the difficulty of getting to Cooper MS and Langley HS and have even gone so far as to lobby VDOT to close entrance ramps to the Beltway. The parents in western Great Falls won't have to worry about that when their kids attend middle and high school in Herndon.
Creating additional demographic balance at Herndon is an additional, and legitimate, benefit, but not the primary driver. If it were, FCPS wouldn't have allowed Langley to exist with its minimal ESOL/FARMS percentages for so many years.
Only in your head is that tantamount to theft. "Theft" implies the taking of something that actually belonged to you, and you never had a right to be assigned to a specific school pyramid within a county-wide system.
Hynes posts all sorts of things on social media to appeal to her left-wing friends, but her actions have been far less radical than her words. No "comprehensive boundary plan" will take shape under her watch, nor is one necessary to effect the boundary changes that will be required when the new western high school is built.
I get it - you may lose some equity in your house because people now anticipate your neighborhood will be moved to Herndon. We all love our profits, even when they exist entirely on paper. But you haven't said a single thing that suggests FCPS should not build another high school in western Fairfax or realign the Langley/Herndon boundaries when that happens. Keep in mind also that, by the time that happens, Langley may have been reassigned other neighborhoods currently zoned for McLean and Marshall that are closer to Langley than the western Great Falls neighborhoods, and in serious need of capacity relief.
