I don’t know statistically but I’m white and I know significantly more black women who were killed by a stranger in DC than white women.

I know of significantly more black women who were killed in sketchy areas. This is unique because of the location. White people are supposed to be safe in Logan’s circle. That’s got everyone freaked out.

I was walking with my daughter by CVS in Tenleytown and a homeless person was raving curse words and threatening phrases. Alarmed, I flagged down a police officer in a passing cruiser and asked him to intervene. He scolded me for flagging him down, and informed me about freedom of speech. Reluctantly, he called some sort of paddy wagon. Police don't want tot ouch this with a ten foot stick, and IMO it's because they feel hung out to dry. Someone will video them doing a wellness check and complain about infringement of rights, and they don't want to be social workers nor are jails the proper place for these people. Our politicians need to address this. DC currently offers fairly moderate weather, many day shelters, lots of dummies who hand out money on the street will nilly, a Mayor who has offered year round right to shelter, and is the home to the federal government which is a MAGNET for the mentally ill. We also need to lock up and treat chronic homeless or erratically mentally ill or nuisance drug addicted (lying in streets), or send them back whence they came to a community equipped to better deal with them What a tragic waste of life and we will hear peep from our public officials, and lots of shrugging from the hipsters who accuse anyone wanting some remedy of "pear clutching" and telling them it's life in the big city and to move to the suburbs yadda yadda. It's all so repetitive.

That's how we get to living in a society like Saudi, where women can't go out, travel alone, dress a certain way, because men can't control themselves or their actions. Give the men a curfew. Start redirecting, and telling men to be responsible - explicitly assert: don't attack, don't rape, don't shoot, don't kill, don't assault, etc. When you keep putting it on the shoulders of women, the entitlement of men and boys grow - they have no reason to change their end.

Really? So what did the victim do wrong here? She was running in a populated, largely safe urban neighborhood before dark.

Are we sure it wasn't dark? Incident occurred around 8pm. The sun set yesterday at 7:13. Looks pretty dark out on the surveillance video, too.

Women should be able to run at night, ALONE, anytime of day without morons on the internet saying THEY should have done something differently to "be safe". This woman did nothing wrong. She was violently attacked and murdered for seemingly no reason. If that doesn't send chills up your spine, seek help. But arguing about the status of daylight is not the point of the arguments above. You are part of the problem.

Lots and lots of women walk home at 7:15 pm all the time. Here is what happens to them: they get home.

What I don't think is a good idea, is limiting your movements based on the possibility of a very, very rare event happening to you.

Not so rare. Maybe an actual murder, yes, OK, but I guarantee you that many of those walks home involve some measure of harassment. I know several women who have been accosted, grabbed, yelled at, etcetera by homeless while walking home from work on those and similar blocks after dark. They now Uber.

I walk on that block pretty much every day. I have for 15 years. I usually see dozens of other people doing the same. I've never seen anyone be touched inappropriately in any way.

The little girl was an accidental bystander shooting. Better to bring up Nia Wilson. Who was also stabbed in the neck and left to die. Not even three months ago.

Although this is awful, it wasn't in DC.

Nia’s killer was a transient/homeless parolee.

I guarantee we'll find out that Wendy's killer was also homeless with a past criminal record.
