None of these are like SLACs, but UVA may be a bit more like an SLAC than the others. The others are bigger research universities than UVA, but that doesn't make UVA worse as an undergraduate school.

This is how I feel. We are VA residents and DC got in to UVA via ED and I'm pleased because it's a great in-state option for DC's very specific major. We are thrilled because it is a good school at an affordable price and only two hours from home. VA Tech would have been a great choice too (DC's second choice). We are very lucky to have two very good choices at in-state rates. Can't ask for more.

What makes it comparable to a SLAC?? It is a great uni but I’d say William & Mary is the one more like a SLAC.

As an undergraduate institution? UCB and UCLA treat undergraduates as third class students.

Based upon experience of legacy (double and quadruple - significant bucks donated) friends this past year I would say legacies no longer count for much unless you happen to fall into the URM, Questbridge, low-income, Blue Ridge Scholars, first-generation (one parent? ), groups.
