I think we're having the wrong debate. I think the bigger issue is why such a dinner even exists. For journalism to maintain objectivity, I don't think there should be this sort of smug, schmoozing that goes on with the WHCD.

Roasts are fine, but they are in the realm of entertainment and comedy. I don't think journalists/journalism should be involved. As it stands, one of the problems we have today (that has nothing to do with any one administration or any one political party) is the overlap of news and entertainment. That's a trend that has been going on for the last decade, and it's not a good one.

If anyone really cares about journalism, the integrity of reporting, then they'll support maintaining some boundaries. And I think the WHCD pushes those boundaries in ways that are not helpful. Comedians should do their thing. The press should do its thing. Keep them separate. Combining them actually calls into question the integrity of both. Part of what comedians do (and historically have always done) is push the boundaries of dialogue. Journalists and the press, however, are supposed to be about reporting the news in an unbiased way. They should not merge. And events that kind of blur the lines only make this infotainment trend worse.

OK, I said posted earlier to say that I usually hate roasts because they're too mean, but I just read WaPo's annotated transcript of her routine, and I found it funny and not overly nasty, except that one reference to the woman who died on Southwest. She's not a politician or public figure, so she doesn't deserve it.

But apart from that, I thought it was NOT over the top.

I would think the same if she had skewered another administration.

Yup. She accomplished the comedian's equivalent of Sherman's March on that room. She burned down the house and many in the media are pissed off that Wolfe had the temerity to show that Media Emperors truly have no clothes. She called out their complicity and the money they are all making off Trump. The last two minutes of her act were a full voiced trashing of the MSM, including CNN and Fox.

The entire point of the comedy sketch at the WHCD is that it celebrates the 1st Amendment. People from the Administration come and have to taking their lumps. Unfortunately for SHS and this White House is that they provide a wealth of material due to their unethical behavior and hypocrisy. They could easily give Michelle Wolfe less material by acting like normal human beings with an ounce of morality.

PS - Maggie Haberman's defense of SHS is PATHETIC. SHS is a known leaker and source for many "anonymous Administration official" news articles. Anyone in the media defending SHS can safely be assumed to be relying on SHS as a source. It's so, so, SO pathetic to watch them grovel.

it's just the way the camera captured the photo at that moment. I have pics of my kids that had similar looks when they were young and I panicked thinking there was something wrong and consulted the pediatrician who assured me it was just the photo and no issue
