The sticker price of schools/colleges keeps going up and up partly in order to fund ever-more-generous financial aid. Dual-earner incomes of typical senior faculty employees tend to be in a protected sweet spot for very substantial grant aid, with a sharp drop-off as incomes move up from there. What hasn't been mentioned is that admissions tend not to be fully need blind, so many parents who might get some aid don't apply for it in the hopes of improving admission odds. Then they experience the aggravation of knowing that other families at the school with similar incomes are paying much less.

It does seem sad that many posters apparently prefer to have the student body be less qualified and composed of rich kids with a handful of working class kids thrown in, but basically no one in between. Wouldn't such an approach remove many of the most outstanding scholars/athletes/artists/leaders?

Not at all. They let you have some equity. You don't need to spend down to qualify for FA.

Thanks to you and 10:39. I didn't realize this. We will keep this in mind should we decide to apply to private in the future.

Not at all. They let you have some equity. You don't need to spend down to qualify for FA.

Just randomly checking out the private school forum. Our HHI is 95k. We have some equity in our home though (80-100k?). I assumed they would make us use that before getting FA which we aren't willing to do. Thoughts?

Unlike her, I'm not trying to pull anything off. FA is not some sort scam to "pull off" - it's there for people who are truly needy. 200K/yr is not truly needy. If you take it, it's not there for someone else. FA at its very best helps break the cycle of poverty in the inner city. At its worst, it is an upper/middle class subsidy that locks in existing socioeconomic structures and income inequality.

You also have no idea how much money any of these people make. They might be able to go on a vacation but might have a home with a low mortgage in a less desirable area, might not buy lots of new clothes, might not belong to a country club and might not eat out very often - just a few examples. Everyone has different priorities and spending habits. Don't assume they make as much money as you or have all of the things you might value. It's all a silly argument.
