I don't have a dog in this fight anymore (which probably means I will now get snarky comments), but I think everyone's fretting over something that is almost impossible to fix. If a big enough group of kids at Wilson didn't care about the PARCC because they were worried about AP's, thought it was stupid, thought is didn't really matter to them, then DCPS and Wilson need to work together to figure out a way to make it matter, assuming they in fact think it really does. If the test scores reflect the level of academic rigor at Wilson, or the schools that feed into it, then DCPS as a whole needs to take a new look at their curriculum. Either way, DCPS has to think the scores are worth caring about more than just the 5 minutes after they see them.

I think it's worth noting, though, that kids all over the country thought the test was stupid. Call it test fatigue or irritation that no one does (or can do) anything to fix the curriculum or achievement gap, but kids in many schools either opted out or put little effort into it. Wilson has many issues, but they aren't really all that different in this regard.

Beyond that, well done, Banneker.

Most of the charters are only giving PARCC to students in the relevant year (10th for ELA and Geometry when that is relevant). My 9th grader took no PARCC exams last year.

DCPS decided to give it to everyone, and more than once. His good friend at Wilson high school has taken (and passed) PARCC ELA and PARC Math Geometry twice (in 9th and 10th). That's beyond what OSSE required and no doubt does seem dumb to some DCPS parents and students.

Going forward anyone taking AP Calc should have taken PARCC math a couple of years prior.



I am confused about the bolded part. Why is the test 3 years after the class?

I'm a Wilson parent and I don't get why are people overreacting to this. The kids who would score well on the test didn't care about taking the test. End of story.

The way to get kids rethinking it is to show them this thread and other commentary and let them know that the reputation of the school is at risk. Believe me I got a thoughtful pause when I brought this up to some students myself.

But to think that these test scores actually mean very much about what the high-performing kids are actually learning, I personally don't buy it, especially given the college results of the seniors last year.


That's what I assume principals did at other schools like SWW, Banneker...

Oh, I don't know. Maybe a better explanation for a statistically significant drop, rather than blaming some sort of senior prank. And, providing a path forward for improving the scores. Instead the principal sends out a jaw dropping, total non sequitur email about some sort of hidden racial biases. I'm sure the Long and Foster agents phones blew up after that email went out.


Maybe Wilson students should have to take the English exam again now.

I found the 2015 subgroup breakouts for white students at Wilson.

In 2015 83.1% scored proficient or advanced and in 2016 45.0% did.
