Aside from the fact that half of families make less than that, 40% of your pre tax income is a huge amount to spend on housing. Certainly if you still have daycare costs for younger kids it is impossible.

OK, so if you earn the median family income in Montgomery County (keeping in mind that half of households earn less), and you spend 40% of your gross income on housing, then you can afford to buy in the Walter Johnson zone (but not Whitman or Churchill).

How does this demonstrate that anybody could afford to send their children to Bethesda or Potomac, if only they truly considered all of their choices?

This is actually an interesting question that I would love to get an answer to. I googled it and again, everything was "the achievement gap between low income and minority students vs. middle income whites," "gap between poor minorities and whites persists" and stuff like that. There doesn't seem to be many studies controlling for SES. Of course we know that low income minorities perform worse than upper income whites, but it would be interesting to see the results of a study that compared low income whites to low income minorities.

Of course, in this area (well, this country actually) poor and minority tend to go hand in hand, and white and wealthy go hand in hand. The wealthiest schools have the highest white populations, the poorest have the lowest white populations.

I care deeply about "these" kids and spent an entire career dedicated to helping them (though some sadly cannot be helped). That being said, I do not want my own kids in school with them-it's that simple. As a parent it is my job to protect my kids-sending them into the "lions den" every day would be doing just the opposite. I want my kids to feel safe, not have to worry about being violated or harrassed, and to be in a place that fosters learning. Sadly many of the "bad" schools are lacking in so many ways-some of these kids do need more restrictive school settings, or to be institutionalized due to severe mental illness or sociopathic behaviors. Sad but true and I say to hell with being "PC" at this point-it is survival of the fittest!
