okay, sure, peapod is great sometimes, but just wanted to make sure you realized you will need a car in SP.

Peapod.com.

And we will get a car. I will have to take lessons to drive it, but I think that might be somewhat necessary anywhere in dc. There's probably a farmers market in silver spring as well? I need to Google that

I don't think we have the luxury of time on that place though. I really wanted more to see neighbors shops etc. Will street view on home comp.

did you look along Conn between Cleveland Park and Van Ness for apartments? trade in having a house for better location to transportation? how will you grocery shop in SP without a car?

The house we are looking at is right by the book store and a small commercial strip on... connecticutt--I think. But it's too far for a practical walk to the metro. I think? I also think I'm in love with the shepherd house and as long as it passes inspection we should take it. We are moving forward with it. I think.

Am still on the bus coming back now. I hate big life altering decisions... so I try to make them quickly.

SP via CA again--are you talking about Politics & Prose? Love love love that book store--and great area; cute shops/restaurants. We actually looked at a house not too far from there in Chevy Chase neighborhood. Unfortunately we don't have anything comparable in Shepherd Park--at least for now (though we may in the somewhat distant future, when Walter Reed gets redeveloped into commercial and residential area).

Anonymous wrote:OP When you say Murch house is between two metro stops, what does that mean in terms of distance? I'm asking because Shepherd park is not necessarily great carless either, and at least there is a metro there.

Funny that you think Murch is not diverse bc I know people who complain that it is their IB school bc it is too diverse.

Probably best would be if you rented Murch house and got redistricted to Hearst after the fact! Ha ha, the irony...

Yikes!

Okay I just checked. Murch zoned school is near intersection of Nebraska and nevada. I really didn't get a sense of the area at all except that it looked lovely and pretty car oriented.

Hi OP - Hearst and Murch are adjacent zones as implied by previous message. Yes, Murch has some diversity and yes it is larger - 600 + students PK - 5th vs. Hearst is 287 students PK - 5th. Hearst has more diversity than Murch both in terms of ethnicity as well as SES. Depending on where you are IB for Hearst the main corridors are Conn Ave or Wisc Avenue. And it is between Tenleytown/AU and Van Ness metros. If both high quality education AND diversity are equally important I'd rank Hearst higher because of more diversity. You could call principal to see about odds for doing 2nd round lottery for 3rd grade OOB at Hearst while you continue looking for a rental IB. How did that house on Rodman pan out?

Hearst zone and southern Murch zone (possibly to become Hearst zone) is diverse and very walkable, easy to metro.

Murch looks like a great school. I am sure it's a great neighborhood... Although am I correct in assuming that it's crowded? The geography worries me too as a carless person. Although I need to look more closwly. We really explored shepherd park.... by the time we saw the west of the park stuff it was pouring rain.

"tolerant" should be "tolerate"

SP via CA again--you'd find many like-minded folks in SP--black, white, and other. I'm biracial, my kid plays w/a Jewish family across the street and a black family on the corner, there's a same-sex couple next door and another around the corner. Pretty inclusive neighborhood despite people being from all walks of life. So I think people here not only tolerant diversity, they embrace it.

That said, again many people here send their kids to private, or charter--although the tide is starting to change and there are more young families enrolling their kids at Shepherd.

Murch is not without diversity. 66% white.
