The thought of a child being abused and neglected just tears me up, so when I read this story, all I can think about are the innocent children and the absence of a responsible person in their lives.

May their sweet souls rest in peace and may their surviving sibling heal from this grief and go on to live a successful life in their honor.

I'll somewhat agree with this, except that I'm a pro-choice, non-religious liberal minority female who has found it surprising that there are so many PPs who feel the need to defend this woman murderer. There is definitely some sort of peverse sense that because she was black and poor that she is entitled to make poor decisions.

So why were people so upset when the family in the recent car accident were judged for THEIR decisions? One child dies at 2 because they didn't put a fence around the pool or supervise, one child dies at 16 because the parents didn't make anyone buckle up or even ride in the backseat and dad fell asleep at the wheel. Yet anyone who judged those decisions was LAMBASTED in that thread because "these people have just lost another child!" Rich local white people do it= so sad, we cannot criticize in their time of grief. Poor black woman in Louisiana does it = tried and convicted in court of DCUM opinion before her whereabouts that night were even disclosed.

In terms of the "6 kids by 4+ fathers" issue, has anyone considered that the fact that this woman likely has mental health issues, severe addiction issues, or may have a very low IQ and not have the mental ability to make what we would consider rational decisions?

If she has addiction issues or a low IQ she apparently gets a free pass for letting her kids die an agonizing death while she goes out clubbing; probably looking for another baby daddy.

For a long time I was under the assumption that she is white trailor trash, seriously. That was my initial assumption and I tore her to shreds.
I have posted negative things about this mom and what color she is really makes no difference.

Yes, many rushed to judgement and...... we were correct. this story plays out too many times and it's so disturbing. The dummy was out clubbing while her children burned to death at home alone.

Yes, but you have to factor in cost. Adoption costs a lot of money. I know of some black couples who are open to adoption. The cost prohibits them.

I grew up in a rural area and many people I knew had babies right out of high school. Some got married and some of those couples were divorced by the time they were 25-30. I didn't get married until I was 26 and I had my first baby at 27 and the second at 28 which makes me an old mom by the standards in my hometown. Living here the parents of my children's peers are older than I am by five to ten years.
My HS friends have kids that are freshmen in college or seniors in HS. Several of them have children with different men and others have five or six children with the same man but they never married but have been engaged to for the last 10-15 years.
I judge this woman, not because of the number of children she had, or the fact that she was living in a trailer. I judge her because she left her children without supervision and they died as a result of her neglect. I feel for her one surviving child and how terrible it must be to lose his siblings so suddenly. I can only imagine he has survivor's guilt and thinks he should have been there to protect his younger siblings even though chances are he too would have died. He may even think that he should have died right along with them.
I can't imagine the guilt the mother must be feeling over the loss of her children. I hope to God she was off trying to provide for those children and not out trying to find another Daddy for them.
I too wonder where the father(s) is(are) and wonder how they are coping with the loss of their child(ren). They must wonder why they left all the kids in the care of this woman who obviously didn't have help or a support system in place. I know how difficult it is with 2 on my own (DH works 90-100 hours a week and has been gone for 6-8 months at a time) but even without family in the area I was still able to find a support system.

I've worked with women like this as an RN in a pregnancy/addiction clinic in Baltimore. I'm seen countless women who have 5-15 kids by different men and have been severely addicted to heroin their entire lives. Many pregnancies the result of prostitution, rape, etc (often while the woman is high or intoxicated).

I don't condone what this woman did but women who have these high numbers of unsupported kids are generally dealing with some incredibly tough situations (often across multiple generations).

heroin addiction - no pity.
low IQ - no excuse.

Do you tell your friends with special needs children the same thing?
