Do folks know how many of the positions on the first two pages (the ones still in line to be cut) are SEIU vs MCEA positions? Theoretically either union could agree to give up some of their raises to avoid layoffs, but I would assume reducing MCEA raises would save a lot more money but they'd be less motivated to do so if most of the cuts are to SEIU jobs...

I think Special Ed Resource Teachers, Social Workers, and Pupil Personnel Workers are MCEA positions-- not sure if any of the others area. So that's like 100 of the 450 positions currently in line to be cut under the budget that Council's about to pass.

They won't be cut

They’ll keep their positions. Teachers and staff just won’t get their step and cola increases.

Will MCEA give up their COLA increases to save mostly-SEIU positions, though?

Haha, good one, and I’m a SEIU member who is likely going to lose their job. My fellow SEIU coworkers wouldn’t even give up their raise to save us. At this point, everyone is looking out only for their own interests.

The thing to understand about MCPS and the unions is that in budget negotiations with the Council, they band together to pressure the Council for more funding. Taylor could have simply let the Council give MCPS less than they did and then say whelp we are going to have to reduce the raises. Instead, he sent a dramatic letter about the horrific impact of not increasing the budget by the exact amount he demanded. And it worked! He got a lot of people upset and scared and they all went to yell at the Council who gave MCPS more than what is frankly wise given the fiscal situation. Now it is time for the unions to work with Taylor to save those jobs. But not before. They needed people to feel scared.

Not of fan of Taylor's manipulative fear tactics - that probably is going to enjoy a short shelf-life. Not sure he can get away with publicizing another multi-page list of all the jobs he will be cutting next year if he doesn't get his way, and think he again will obtain some success.

It's a crap way to communicate to school district employees.

Folder did the same thing in 2024.

I don't understand the protection. Is it because they were principals, so part of that union? Does that afford protection, even when there has been some form of negligence? It took a while to get rid of Beidleman after he was exposed, and his conduct was egregious for years.

No, it’s because lots of people think they can do the job better, and then realize they’re actual organizational mgmt skills and ability to move 100’s of adults and kids in the correct direction is not a simple task. And it’s a thankless one.

I think this is their MO. Get everyone upset with threats of deep cuts. When we continue to push for a fully funded budget, the unions will ask us to vote on giving up our raises. We did this is 08/09. Personally, I will not vote to give up raises again. Last time it took YEARS for them to get us back to the pay we voted to give up. I am too close to retirement to vote for that again.
They are so good at weaponizing the kids to get us to sacrifice what is best for our own lives.

What do you mean, "continue to push for a fully funded budget"? The budget decision is made, the cut is $36M.

You can absolutely fight for that money to be taken from somewhere besides the first two pages of cuts Taylor laid out, and also from somewhere besides raises, although I doubt that will be successful. But MCPS doesn't print their own money-- now that County Council has decided on funding, "fully funded" is impossible.
just wait..a solution will appear and everyone will say wow TT is so smart

Like I said, it may be possible to avert cuts and you can fight for that. But the budget is $36M short, the fight is now not to get that additional $36M but instead to have it taken out of things besides jobs.
No, TT should use shortfall as a way to take out the trash in CO. And he should absolutely save the jobs of all Media Assistants and ECAs.

It was sent out to the people who need to know. If you weren't on the e-mail then you are just being nosy at this point.
