I think the back door was probably unlocked and he let himself in through the door and found them upstairs in their bed and surprised them. There was no sign of a break in even after the coworkers went inside so that leads me to believe a door was unlocked.

If she was a stay at home mom to two kids under five years old, how does that make her any different from any of the many dozens of SAHMs on this website who have an education, prior career and means to self-support but who have chosen to stay home with their kids for their early childhood???

A not insignificant number of women know from a young age that they want to be stay at home mothers and raise kids. To do that you need to have a husband who works and makes decent money. In order to get a guy like that, you need to bring something to the table – good looks, good education, and a decent personality. These women often get a degree in an early childhood education in order to prepare themselves to be better mothers. I personally know a handful of family than our social circle who we have gone down this well-trod path.
