The county shouldn’t eliminate one of its top schools. I’m surprised to see anyone advocating for this. I am guessing it isn't Wootton parents.

I’m a Wootton parent probably about 5 mins driving to each of Crown and Wootton, if all of Wootton was moved to Crown I’d be ok with that since it’d be a brand new school well probably 7-10 years before moving in in this scenario. If it were still called Wootton it’d be fine by me. I think biggest concern would be them carving off sections and then adding 40-50% of the new school from other areas.

Of course I’d love to see the existing school renovated and expanded but given the fact we’ve been waiting 15-20 years I’m not optimistic!

Wootton would not be "moved" to Crown, and it certainly would not be called Wootton. What would happen is that Wootton would close, Crown would open, and a new study would be conducted to re-allocate all the students. They would shuffle all over the district and the community would cease to exist. This should be extremely obvious.

Wootton was not approved for a renovation in the new CIP.

I think they could still reassign some Clarksburg students to Damascus to relieve overcrowding there, for example, but wouldn't reassign any students directly to Crown at this time. That would come later, sometime after Damascus, Magruder, and Wootton had used it for a holding school. Note that neither Magruder nor Wootton's project sare included in the new CIP.
Yes. The 5% of the (probably childless) people who want boundary changes do, in fact, live all over the county.

That seems to we are talking about a decade like 10 years after if wait until Damascus, Magruder, and Wootton have used Crown HS as a holding school. My kids may have graduated from MCPS by then. Lol

That would be good. Not many are really in favor of boundary changes.

Not many meaning who? Wootton, Churchill, Walter Johnson, etc? Some of us are actually happy about the change to the boundaries and want them redrawn
In the boundary analysis survey a few years ago. 95% of the county said they wanted to remain in their current school or be moved to a school closer to home if the first option wasn't possible. The only people who really want boundary changes are a handful of childless east county progressives.

Just because people want to remain in their current school does not mean that people don't want boundary changes. For the record there are people all across the county who want boundary changes. They just want it done with thorough analysis and in as a far a way as possible. Once all the changes are done, people will adapt just like they always do.

First they have to get permission from the state and then the board apparently has to vote on whether to go along with Taylor's holding school proposal for Crown.

What happens if the proposal of Crown HS as holding school approves? Likely or not likely to happen? It seems like to be a good decision from another standpoint. My brain is foggy and cannot process and predict what the outcomes are if it is approved?

Hard to say, but I'm assuming the board would need to redraw the scope of the boundary study. It sounded like they were proposing Damascus be the first high school to occupy Crown as a holding school, and that they would do so including the newly-reassigned students there.

I’d like answers to this as well. We attend an elementary school that was newly assigned to DHS in all four options and we’d like to know if that would still stand should crown NOT open and be used as a holding school

If you are talking LES, then I'm happy about the reassignment. The PTA post about responding to the survey sounds like they don't like the options?

You must not have kids in school. After things become so serious, most people said they don’t want to be impacted and don’t want their kids to move schools and be separated from their friends. These progressives just don’t understand how disruptive boundary change is to kids.

Yes and given the amount of outdated facilities county wide that need replacement and all the money it will cost, it seems to me like they want to a) not cause so much disruption when enrollment is declining, b) use this to help renovate Damascus for sure and then probably/maybe Magruder and Wootton. Given crowns proximity to Wootton it seems like it may even make sense to use crown to house Damascus for 2 years to finish a renovation, then perhaps Magruder for 3 years then if enrollment has declined as expected possibly move Wootton to Crown for good.

Does the county have a holding school large enough for middle schools? I know Tilden was at Woodward before it was destroyed and replaced but not sure where else they have one. But the current Wootton building could have hvac replaced and be used for holding school to redo middle schools too.

If I recall Woodward was closed for many years and then used as Tilden and then reopened as a high school. Could do the same for Wootton.

Much rather not blow $300M on an unneeded school when there’s elementary schools from the 50s and 60s still in use!

No, not anymore. That's one rationale for turning SSIMS into a holding school. But they could use one upcounty as well.
