I think it's very hot or miss. Sadly (because I like Charli XCX and think the provenance of the song is petty/stupid), Actually Romantic is one of the better sounding songs on the record, even though (or maybe because) its fully just a Pixies rip off.

Cancelled! Could have been good but they went with a really aggressive instrumentation and it's very lyric-heavy, and the combination feels like a bummer. I also HATE the repetition of the phrase "Gucci-clad" -- it feels so cheap and easy. Taylor sometimes has cheap lyrics like that but putting it in the chorus? Ugh.

Opaline is the boppiest song and most likely to get ear worm status, but it's nowhere near prior hits.

One of the things that really jumps out to me is how heavily produced the whole thing is, to it's detriment. I know these are the 1989 producers, and is a more popular sound than her recent albums, but it sounds like the production of a far less experienced artist, someone they were trying to elevate with production tricks. I just don't get it conceptually. If she wanted to do pure pop, write some actual hooks? Lighten up some of the songs with fewer lyrics? I don't know. It just sounds overdone and try hard.

Canceled is the worst** thing, not wordy thing!

I flew to Europe to see her with my youngest daughter. Oldest daughter and I went to Reputation tour. We have every cd. So I’m not a casual fan. And I hate this album. The first 3 songs are good (but not as good as anything else she’s done , just good for this album) and the rest are pretty much unlistenable. Cancelled is the wordy thing she’s ever put out. Everything is so dated and cheesy. It’s not fun and vampy like Reputation or fun pop like Lover. It’s just bad garbage. She is so insulated now that all her experiences revolve around fame. I’m tired of listening to her lament fame. Write the memoir. Give us good music , not whining about the cage you’re trapped in and how your house is haunted. Just disappointing. She’s regressed as a musician and a songwriter - it’s not just that the lyrics are simplistic , they don’t add up to earworm pop songs like 1989 either. A largely forgettable collection of songs. And no it doesn’t match the showgirl theme. Nor do her press junket outfits of burnt orange sweaters and tweed skirts? Just so confusing and jumbled all around.

+2. Loved her last 4 albums + some of Reputation & Lover too. Her new album is boring. Ime, people who broadcast over and over how happy they are in their relationship, and how satisfied they are with their partner's "wood", usually aren't. It seems like she is trying to make Matty Healy jealous and one-up him and Charlie xcx.
