I still find him hilarious. Different strokes for different folks. I guess CBS was too afraid of Trump to keep him on.
Same! Love him.
Despite what that magas on this thread want to believe Colbert is so talented and really does such a great job with all his interviews.
Then why was his show not profitable?
It was profitable.

It’s easy to find plenty of links that talk about how it has been losing roughly $40 million per year at this point. If I weren’t driving right now, I would post some.
I have not seen anything that counters these assertions.
Why cancel now? CBS had ample opportunity to do so. Why now? Because of the merger. Trump can’t handle his feelings being hurt.
DP. Please post your credible sources stating that this show was profitable for the network. We won't hold our breath.

They didn't "cancel" the show this week.
He will get to finish his contract. They simply are not renewing the contract
So why announce it now?
Colbert announced it. Maybe he's in on the plot to suppress himself?
No, he was told by CBS of their decision. Why did they tell him now?
To give him time to make other plans.
To give themselves time to create and advertise a new show to replace him.
Duh.

This is the biggest question, closely followed by, why not renegotiate everyone’s contract to cut costs considering the declining viewership in the current media landscape?

Anonymous wrote:Not profitable. And the production sounds like a graft pit of epic proportions. Only 2.4 million viewers, most of them older than dirt, for a whopping sum of money. This insufferable a-hole has a team of a hundred comedy "writers" making big bucks and there's literally nothing on the average show that makes anyone chuckle? Everywhere there is stealing money.
"Mr. Colbert has 2.4 million viewers most nights—less than 1% of the country. It’s a tiny fraction of Carson’s viewership at a time when the nation was smaller. The Late Show’s audience has fallen more than 30% in the past five years, and even more among the critical 18- to 49-year-old demographic. Mr. Colbert’s operation reportedly costs north of $100 million annually, and hemorrhaged $40 million last year, nearly half being the host’s salary."

Why cancel it now? Timing is very suspicious.
It's not suspicious at all. If they wanted to silence Colbert, why keep him on the air for an entire year with nothing to lose? The Trump conspiracy theories don't make any sense. He's old and tired, expensive, and then to top it off, he publicly railed against his bosses. I mean.... you can't behave that way, put up loser ratings, get paid $15M per year and keep your job. Come on.
This. The people who desperately want this to be some kind of conspiracy make me laugh. It was a huge money loser for the network. Next.
Pay attention. CBS is in the middle of a merger with skydance. As it drags on, CBS loses millions. Who is in charge of mergers? The federal government is and then you have the biggest baby in charge, Trump, who can’t handle anyone making fun of him. Why do you think they payed for the nonsense 60 minutes settlement? Because they want this merger to go through.

Well, they did not “cancel” it now. They indicated that they will not be renewing it after its current contract expires on schedule next year. They are simply acknowledging the obvious trend that the traditional late night variety show format is not sustainable in 2025. They do not anticipate that Colbert could make it profitable again, nor that anyone else could.
And corporate mergers and restructuring tend to have a way of encouraging these hard decisions when various business units are under increased scrutiny to put their financial pictures in the best possible light.
