This is legit one of the dumber things I’ve read.

Why -- it's just a marketing thing. Campaigns are a lot about marketing. When you sell a product you want it to have a catchy name.

There’s already a meme about Balls to the Walz or something close to that. I like the sound of Waltz better too but it’s working so far.

Changing how he pronounces his name to market him as a VP has got to be the looniest things said on here. And sure wouldn't enhance his attribute of being trustworthy. Can you imagine Donald? "He used to be a Minnesotan but you know he changed his name? I think he's German now."

Right?! Why didn’t she pick Shapiro and try to make a battle for PA? Did Shapiro not want it? Did the opposition research find stuff on him or Kelly? This is “meh” for me but maybe he’ll surprise us?

If she’s going to get PA, it will be on her own, she doesn’t need the state’s gov to carry the state. I like Shapiro a lot but his previous statements are a distraction in this current political environment. People have short memories though and who knows what the landscape will look like in ~10 years, when he’ll be 61 - a very normal age to run for pres. Plus I think he needs to stay as Gov longer - he’s only in his first term.

Given everything going on Israel right now, the dual loyalty thing could've totally splintered the Democrats and it will always haunt Shapiro given the IDF story. I say this as a Jew who knows the antisemitic tropes too well.

Not to mention creating a constitutional crisis if he ever had to serve in her stead as Commander in Chief.

Gross antisemitism on display. Same comment would not be said about other groups.

I am a dual citizen with a country with mandatory military service, and the same comment would be said about anyone who volunteered to serve in a non-US military.

Schwarzenegger served in the Austrian army and nobody gives a shit.

She looks way younger than 59. Why would she get a facelift when she already looks better than most of the early 40s people I know? Walz looks like a grandpa but that can be reassuring to idiots who think a young looking woman can’t be experienced or serious. Plus he’s energetic despite his wizened visage.

Kelly did not have a lot of pizazz beyond the resume. And I agree with PP that there was probably something that came out during vetting. His wife has been disabled for a long time. I’m a woman and pragmatic so I wouldn’t be mad at him for wanting physical intimacy with someone. But it would tarnish his public image as a loyal husband.

Hot people are more likely to win elections. As long as the facelift is done well it will enhance a candidates electability.

Then Harris is the winner. Have you seen the competition?

From Minnesota, knew an extended family with the same last name, all pronounced "Walls." The German pronunciation gone (during WWII anti-German sentiment in parts of Minnesota did get very nasty, people may have changed their pronunciation at the time.)

Oh yeah, there’s that commitment to democratic ideals we’re supposed to be voting for.

+1 This is the dual loyalty trope. It's antisemitism 101. Now that you know, please do better in the future.

But there is dual loyalty. Some Jewish people I know say they care more about Israel than the US. Not saying that is Shapiro but it is not uncommon. No way he can even pretend to be unbiased in Middle East politics

So why are you saying there is dual loyalty? I'd check myself if I were you.

+1

American Jew here. I have NO loyalty to israel. None.

I know people just look at short term winning and who looks good but substance is more meaningful. I am not yet sold on his substance. Having a good resume and knowing how to behave to crowds so they all think you're their friend is politics 101. He is a good VP choice but it does not make him in my eyes as a hero.

Oh god, he’s…savvy??

Jew here. Jews have been the target of this since before Israel existed. Not always considered a citizen by the country they were born into and live in. The divided loyalty thing is definitely a long-running anti-semitic trope and Shapiro having volunteered in Israel and worse, on a military base plays right into it. All it takes is for someone to say, "You volunteered for the IDF and not your own military, why?" It's devastating because even if it's misleading, it paints him with suspicion rightly or wrongly and it will follow him for his career.

What do you think his answer would be? (Maybe he has, but I haven’t followed him at all.)

PP here. I don't think there is a good one. Maybe chalk it up to youthful idealism and emphasize the other volunteering work he did. But it won't go unnoticed that he didn't use that youthful idealism to serve his own country in any military capacity. That's also a classic anti-semitic trope (e.g., effete, urban intellectual). Kelly and Walz both served. That matters to more than a few folks.

In that case you should be talking to Trump and trying to get him to fix his turkey gobble and the bags around his eyes. Maybe JD could give him some eyeliner hints so Trump’s eyes could really pop against his pumpkin colored skin.

Trump has already gotten a facelift, but it is time for a another one. Biden had gotten at least two.

He doesn’t sound old. He speaks with clarity and force. He comes off as believing in the American dream, not cynical. He is intelligent and funny. He is the one who called the emperor’s new clothes. Shapiro would have his career ruined if he had to go up against the stuff that would be thrown at him. It would be terrible to watch and a constant theme. I think he is better off in the long run.

Shapiro wants to be president one day so he’s going to work his butt off to get Harris elected.

This election is going to be one on who wins the communication narrative. Walsh is a great communicator, especially for average folk.

Maybe so in the moment, but Shapiro’s lack of loyalty hasn’t gone unnoticed. In 2014, he allegedly planned to endorse one of his closest political allies for PA governor. 10 days before the primary vote he flipped and endorsed Tom Wolf, who quickly appointed Shapiro as his successor two years before Shapiro “announced” he was running for governor! Sweet premeditated deal. Shapiro is loyal to himself. This fact was buried under all of the Pro Israel bashing against him. VPs primary responsibility is loyalty to the president, unless the president is a felon and election fraud.

Wow, wasn't aware of this but in general Shapiro does not hide his naked ambition well. It's just too obvious and I've been wondering all along if Harris could trust him. Fetterman seems like a straight arrow and really dislikes him.

Yeah, I mean they're all hyper-ambitious but Walz is canny about concealing his well. He played this game HARD and won.
