1. It does next to nothing to support the state
2. Its graduate schools suck, especially at stem, which in turn contributes nothing to the state
3. It professional schools are elite, but that doesn’t help the state
4. It purposely keeps undergrad enrollment low to become more elite, thereby turning down more in state students
In short, Michigan sought to give “an uncommon education for the common man”. UVA said “ an uncommon education is only possible with the uncommon, elite, man.”

+1 In the South old money families go to their flagship.
No. Just no.
Yes. Just yes.
I'm southern, are you?
I've seen a fair number that defer to places like sewanee, Davidson, college of Charleston, but why wouldn't you go to your flagship and pledge the same Greek house as your successful parents? Your currency isn't worth very much at a place like Colgate or (if you can get in) an Ivy.
not worth it for the parents either. good old boys and junior league moms want to send their kids to a school their friends know and where their friends' kids also go.
I live in the South and UVA and W&M are very popular with the confederate crowd. I bet they are a little bit inbred too

Anonymous wrote:I would not for a second put Brown on this list. I suspect the majority of Brown students are strongly attracted to the lack of required classes. That’s why it is so popular with Hollywood offspring who might not be actual Ivy material, but can get by with a bunch of easier classes. At a school with snob appeal, students wouldn’t be deterred by required classes, even if they included classical languages or ancient philosophy.
