Someone made a good observation in another discussion - something along the lines of "I don't care much for right-wingers, but usually after voting in right-wing legislation they want to live in that place. After left-wingers vote in left-wing legislation, they run from the consequences, move somewhere else, and then start pushing for the same kind of legislation in their new hometown."

I've also been shocked by the number of people I've talked to who said that there wasn't any crime problem and that it was just Republican fear-mongering - right up until the moment where they got assaulted or had their car stolen. Then they start talking about moving out of the city.

Well, thanks. You voted for policies and politicians that were destroying the city for years, insulted and shouted down anyone who said there were problems, and then when the consequences of your actions catch up with you you're going to run away and leave the mess you made for others to clean up.

Its called the Californian. If you're willing to play the long game, be ready to buy up places during the RE crash, and when the "Californians" repeat their pathos in Bethesda+, DC RE will recover.

It was literally the first issue Krukoff listed! Come on people, let’s do better next time.

DC Issues

Public Safety/Support Police and the Rule of Law: Crime is on the rise. We must invest in police and empower them to do their jobs, with empathy, but with the knowledge that we have their back. We need more police officers on the beat. A cost benefit analysis must occur prior to anyone breaking the law, even for a minor offense. Homeless encampments must be appropriately removed. Clean shelters with wrap around services must exist and be utilized for DC homeless residents that qualify.

DC Ward 3 resident for 20 plus years and registered Democrat although I consider myself independent ( which is impossible to be both in this city and the country). I voted for Krukoff. Despite the R next to his name he was the best choice and the only one focused on real issues, including crime. I’m also a federal prosecutor and the handwriting has been on the DC increasing violent crime rate wall for years. I literally felt like I was the only one paying attention in the last election ( while all of my neighbors continue to fret about bike lanes) and here we are. DC voters are generally the worst and this is what happens with no true two party system. And I’m about as progressive on most social issues as they come so please don’t assume I’m a MAGA, etc.

Federal prosecutor -- what's your take on this post https://www.reddit.com/r/washingtondc/comments/17k87p4/why_is_washington_dc_so_violent/?

"In 2022 the [US Attorney's] office declined to prosecute 67% of local arrests (53% of felonies), up from 31% in 2016. That is much higher than in other cities: according to the Washington Post, last year Philadelphia prosecutors dropped just 4% of cases, Cook County, which includes Chicago, 14% and Detroit 33%. Such a high dismissal rate could well be discouraging police from making arrests. And though it could suggest triaging, where prosecutors prioritise slam-dunk cases, the office’s win-rate did not budge as they slimmed down their docket. That sends a message: in America’s capital, committing a crime may not have consequences."

Federal prosecutor here - I do not work at the USAO but yea, this is a significant problem which requires more attention. However, most prosecutors know that DC generally has one of the highest jury nullification rates in the country so fault can’t only be placed with law enforcement and prosecutors not effectively doing their jobs. DC juries are notoriously accepting of crime, and distrustful of police ( understandable in many circumstances) and thus extremely hard to get a conviction in superior court. I have several venue options in the cases I bring and I will avoid bringing a case in DC like I’d avoid the plague. It’s a broken system and one not designed for success. And i am speaking only for myself in my personal capacity for what that’s worth.

I have served on a jury in DC and was also shocked by this tendency. What's the solution? Get absorbed into MoCo? I am starting to be "fine" with that. Leave the federal land to the Feds, and the rest of DC can be absorbed into MD. And try to get Hogan to run again.

Amen to all of this.

The areas around the Cleveland Park, Van Ness, and Tenleytown stations are unsafe after dark. Occasional police presence helps, but otherwise there is frequent open marijuana use, loitering, and aggressive pan handling. How did we let this happen so fast?

Well, for one thing we ignored the housing voucher changes on Ct. Ave
We also ignored the riots that broke windows and showed a total lack of support to businesses
We decriminalized marijuana which has made the whole city seedy
We censured the police in a variety of ways in 2019
Weve convicted police for low speed 'chases'--that kid on the scooter. making it the fault of police, not the citizen who doesn't stop.
I could go on and on

New poster--Federal Prosecutor, I'm one of your neighbors who also voted for Krucoff and agrees with what you say 100%. I also would like to know what is happening with prosecutions when people (rarely) ARE arrested. Why the low rate, and what can we do. Also, what is up with the crime lab? How is that not due for a federal takeover. Is evidence just not being processed, or is it sent out of state? Thanks for your insights!

Neighbor prosecutor here. Can’t speak to the DC crime lab ( see my post above) but it’s a great question. Another example of a completely broken system imo.

I just don't understand how we can not be processing evidence. Either we are in dereliction, or it is happening elsewhere?

Neighbor again. My understanding after a quick search is that the work is being outsourced to contractors. Embarrassing what a cluster this appears to be. A systematic failure at so many levels.

This is just a total breakdown, IMO ^

And we'd still have 50 states and not have to change flags and stationary and all that ^. Current DC citizens could be 'grandfthered' into having the DC flag on their license along with the MD flag, and it would be a fun relic/story for the grandkids. FWIW, I was born in DC General. I no longer care about this city or statehood. This city has betrayed ALL of us.
