Just to bring this conversation back to the reality of the situation. I live outside of Portland. It was youth night at the bowling alley where the shooter hit and there was a team of deaf children bowling.

This guy, despite what is being said in this thread, had a history of actually being a good guy. His family is saying this is some acute incident and so are his army reservist colleagues. Which isn't to defend him but to say it is actually very difficult to figure out when someone is truly snapping, and it can in fact happen rather suddenly.

So when all of you speak up against gun control you are of course all essentially saying that a man's right to have weapons is more important than deaf children being able to bow, elementary schoolers who are going to school, concert goers, people shopping at wal-mart, etc.

the insanity is around 1/3 of the population thinks they will need more guns because of this and buy even more. Mass shootings are like black friday to some of these crazies.

There will be some point at which even hardliners will say enough is enough. That point came and went a long time ago for many of us, and it may not ever come for others, but I do believe that change can happen. Joe Camel was once as recognizable as the Disney logo by kindergartners. We turned that industry from beguiling our kids with a cartoon character who showed them how cool it was to smoke, to a point where the majority of us adults support a complete ban on the sale of cigarettes. It’s really something to be proud of. We didn’t anticipate vaping though…

that is a nice thought, but the data doesn't support your argument. Smoking was already in decline starting in the mid 60s, and becoming less and less popular over time. A similar type of approach already happened with guns from the 1920s - 1990s. You use to be able to go without an ID and cash to the local hardware store and buy fully automatic machine guns in the 1920s, with the passage of the NFA, and various other restrictions on carry started to emerge over the next 50-70s years. As america was prosperious and a high trust society, demand for guns started going down going into the 1970s, it sort of peaked again with the crime wave in the 80s, and various firearm laws were passed culminating with the AWB in the 90s. Then post AWB something happened, demand started rising slowly but steadily and has been going through the roof ever since and laws and restrictions placed in since the 30s are rolling back because of the increase in demand.

Yes cigaretts were very much in the culture in the same way as guns are today, its in all the movies and video games and that has been detrimental. But the loss of a high trust society makes it so that there is really nothing dampening demand. And so yes, you will see 3d printed guns being popularized, you will then see machine guns coming back again. around 1/3 of the country wraps their identity with that of the gun. It is also very very difficult to change a constitutional amendment (it could be done, but maybe in a more prosperious and less contentious time).

Don’t be such a defeatist. Just because something is difficult doesn’t mean we should throw up our hands and give up.

Perhaps let the state sell it. Take away the profit motive and it could be successful.
