Studies of wealth in America show that most families pass little wealth to the next generation and of those who do it’s typically dissipated in the next generation. Even once-rich families like the Vanderbilts have lost their wealth. Overwhelmingly, today’s billionaires made their wealth through contemporary business pursuits - Gates, Buffet, Musk, Zuckerberg, and Bezos were not born billionaires nor have they benefited from the past slave trade.

This is not a simple thing to do because of logistics. Most of the elite schools are strapped for space and growing their classes will be a huge undertaking in terms of building dorms and facilities. Yale has grown 15% in the last few year because it was able to build 2 new dorms. Columbia can’t grow without building new dorms in it neighborhood, the same with Berkeley. The neighborhoods of these schools sue to prevent these schools from expanding.

Yale has more admins than students.
The administrative bodies at these schools have grown like an out of control cancer.

Also, the school needs to have enough people on their team to make an actual team. You can't have just 3 people on the lacrosse team.

The college tour is called the "million dollar walk" because all the school needs is 4 kids who fall in love with the school and Ka-ching! A million right there.
If the school didn't have enough religion majors last year, they will go after religion majors.

After reading the book I'm pretty disgusted. They are not looking for academic excellence but a "community". You are paying 1/4 million for your kid to flesh out their "community". I've started looking at schools in other countries. The UK doesn't do this "holistic" BS, they want to look at your academic stats and your essay has to be about your academic focus, not about your personality and what you bring to their so-called "community".

Because the primary objective of Ed Blum is to lower access to URMs ( and blacks specifically ) and to maintain the advantages in admissions thst whites have had for centuries. He has been at it for decades. Asians are just being used as "model minority " pawns in a larger chess game.

They cannot. The Constitution and the Civil Rights Act prohibit discrimination based on race. It does not prohibit discrimination based on a person’s economic condition. Otherwise the progressive income tax we have would be unconstitutional.

Need-aware schools would also be unconstitutional. Most private colleges, and virtually all private K-12 schools, would immediately go bankrupt.

If anything, college AOs have been discriminating against the upper middle class for quite a long time. UC is officially prohibited from AA thanks to CA voters, but they use economic status and whether the applicant is first generation instead. They use the applicant’s zip code to discriminate against the “rich.” Even more ridiculously, they prefer unwed teenage moms because so few of them apply for college. Talking about diversity!

The SAT and GPAs are just small pieces of info.

I have been to quite a few graduations comping from a large family and have a few kids. I say only 2-3 kids every impressed me. And GPA and SATs scores are meaningless. They are just numbers on a piece of paper.

My favorite kids my oldest daughters high school valedictorian who did not dress up, wrote a speech not did his parents attend who said graduating HS not a big deal does not even know why we do these graduation things. Then added a GPA is just a number. We all have numbers my number is not more important than the lowest GPA or any of your GPAs we are all graduating today so who cares. He then said well that’s it.

I asked daughter what up? That white dude in jeans and shaggy hair is really that smart?

She said he never once brought a book home or studied once and skips class or goofs off. He was in get robotics class. First day professor gave semester long robotic assigned to build a robot. He built one out of stuff he found in class room while he was talking. He got A.

He also was an advisor to a Nobel prize winner. Literally Nobel prize winners came to his house for help on projects. Kids parents were blue collar. He got a full ride to Harvard.

My second favorite was Valedictorian on my oldest sisters college. He has a 4.0 volunteered 40 hours a week plus worked full time 40 hours a week. Do the math that is crazy.

My older sister well she got a masters degree at 21, perfect 4.0 GPA and published a scientific text book still in use. All be 21.

The kid does not realize people out there are just more impressive

I have a cousin at an HBCU with a 1590. Offered a spot at an Ivy and other T25s. The financial aid was not enough.

The is a delta between what you imagine and reality.
