She explicitly stated that he has physically threatened her or someone in her family as recently as this last year. This isn't from when he was 12.
I don't know why people are having such a hard time accepting that in a family with two dysfunctional parents and kids raised on television in an exploitative environment from essentially birth, there can be more than one person behaving badly.
Kate had Collin committed, and 1) didn't tell his dad, and 2) rarely or barely visited him. Those two data points are horrific. It doesn't mean that she had *no reason* to commit him other than she's picking on him. Now you have another kid in the family getting death threats for 'not taking Collin's side,' and when she details his terrible behavior you jump to "she's nothing but an extension of Kate" instead of hearing what is being said. I get why people don't like Kate Gosselin - she's not a sympathetic figure. But you are writing off every piece of evidence that doesn't align with your preconceived notion of "Kate Monster, Jon good, Collin victim, all other kids puppets" and it's really dumb.
He was only *11* when she had him committed full-time to a residential facility for apparently years. That shouldn’t happen unless the child is very, very sick in a permanent way, which is clearly not the case for Collin. Further, she hid him from Jon. I unfortunately am adjacent to the special needs behavioral world, and even the sickest kid in that age range I know has only spent brief periods institutionalized.
What is almost certainly the case is that Collin was a more difficult kid that Kate made worse with poor, harsh parenting. This is the *classic* spiral for kids with oppositional behaviors. Then because Kate had too many kids she couldn’t cope in any way except institutionalizing him. She didn’t even have the minimum maternal instinct or self-awareness to get him placed with a relative … such as his own father.
Clearly not the case? Almost certainly? Why should anyone take you seriously? You don't even know these people.
I don’t know them, but I know disruptive behaviors and large families. Institutionalizing a kid for 3 years with no dx other than ADHD is very, very unusual. The fact that Jon got full custody and got him released speaks volumes.
So probably more than ADHD going on. Why do you think we have the full picture of what's going on with him? It speaks volumes that he was institutionalized for that long. You don't know everything.
If there was something more going on, he would have that diagnosis. Kids don’t get stuck in those places for *years* unless they are severely sick. Collin has been living successfully in the community for years, graduated from a mainstream HS, is enlisting in the military. Kate got him institutionalized to get rid of him - because she could pay for it. She didn’t even fight for custody in the end.
Are you for real? He probably does have the diagnosis and the family knows as well. But to not violate his privacy, make it difficult for him to get a job some day, avoid stigmas, and many other reasons they aren't going to fully disclose what's going on. You don't know these people.
A kid with a serious diagnosis does not spend 3 years institutionalized (starting as a pre-teen!) then get out and get mainstreamed just fine and enlist in the army. Pediatric mental health doesn’t work that way. She was warehousing him. It’s totally obvious.
Mainstreamed just fine? What about the claims that his dad abused him and kicked his ass? Threatening his sister? He doesn't seem to be doing great.
Of course there are rough spots - being institututionalized from 12-15 will really have lasting harms. But he graduated on time, did ROTC and is enlisting. This appears to be a stable kid.
I guess we'll see. Since he seems to have a problem with authority figures and acting out I'm sure he'll do just great in the military, if he actually did enlist.
Exactly! All this guessing and assuming doesn't mean as much as seeing what the future holds for the Gosselins. Mady is the quieter twin and I believe it took a lot for her to speak up. That's just my opinion though. It's weird that people want to force their opinions about people they don't know.
Mady is not the quiet twin. You’re thinking of Cara. Mady has never been afraid to speak her mind.

I expect we haven’t heard the end of Gosselin family dysfunction. Poor kids.
I suspect the show paid for the institution to keep the family image perfect.
And to avoid having to film Collin not participating. He said in the Vice interview that he no longer wanted to be filmed and then showed clips of him sitting sullenly and silently next to his brothers on a couch when being filmed by the crew. TLC I think are the absolute real villains in all this. The made easily over a hundred million dollars off this family. When you look at all the money the network made, the family got peanuts. Paying for residential treatment-around 80 to 100k a year would be worth it for the network to earn millions.

Many institutions like the one he was in are happy to take kids whose parents will pay for it. I suspect he was not cooperating with the show and the show paid for it. It speaks volumes of her putting him in an institution and lying to John about it when John could have taken him and at least tried. Kids need love, attention and support. It's impossible to give every kid everything with that many kids as a single parent. It was basically growing up in a group home with your mom.
If it was just to be rid of him why not just send him to boarding school? Why bother with the institution? Something doesn't quite add up that everyone was conspiring against poor Collin.
Boarding schools are not during the summer and holidays/breaks so she'd have to take him back for a few weeks or months and she wanted him hidden. I think he didn't fit into her perfect family image for the show so she got rid of him. Dad would have been the best choice, boarding school second. Most of those places are pretty horrific having worked in a few.

Since she hasn’t seen him since he was 12 I’m more inclined to think he said something that she deemed hateful and/or violent and used that as an excuse to alienate him from her life. Toxic family members are a real thing and I absolutely understand cutting them off (I’ve had to do it) but teenagers are immature and don’t understand consequences of their words. Hopefully when they all grow up (and Kate is in a nursing home) they’ll all see how ridiculous this is and reconnect.
