Evanston is the start of the north shore, but it is very different than most of them. The area around Northwestern is great and crime is lower (other than it's a college campus near a big city where criminals know they can target stupid students who walk with their AirPods in at midnight, etc). So the area right around NU is safe but there are parts of Evanston that are not, and are much higher crime. However as a student you will likely never go near those areas
