Quite honestly why not just pre-emptively shift to a clear backpack policy for the whole district? What would it hurt? It would provide greater clarity and transparency, create less room for contraband objects to be carried in, and be done collectively as a whole vice in reaction to events, etc. like is happening in Newport News. Just be proactive rather than reactive. I understand it might not be popular, but, I think safety should trump popularity.

This is so frightening.
I have a Freshmen that looks like a baby. We are late growers and they are still so young at 14. Many of his friends haven't had their voices change yet or hit their big growth spurt.
It's so sad. It's also so sad that the school environment for kids across the country has made it difficult to feel safe and go there to LEARN. Shootings and drugs and violence, etc.

We did the drug czars of the 80s back and stop this flow of fentanyl into our country. China is flooding Mexico with the precursor chemicals and Mexico is flooding us with the pills.
Its hard to stop the flow of something that people in this country really want. That's the true issue here.
+1. It's like gun control. The fact is, most Americans want to be able to buy a gun if they want. They want to be able to keep one in their home if they want. It's hard to control guns when they are wanted.

Multi-prong approach, the flow and the on the ground education/enforcement/resources. And I don't think people want the fentanyl it's just what is coming in and since it's cheap and they don't know it's laced they are buying it. Get 'em hooked.

Did you just hold Philly up as an example of how to handle the drug epidemic? Philly essentially encourages drug use and makes it easier for addicts and thsi show in the OD rate which is the highest in the nation for major cities. Your suggestion is to make it easier to die, which is super in the long run cleans up the gene pool and reduces users.

Are they really "good kids" if they're buying drugs illegally? I feel for those and their families whose mistake led to death because the pill was laced with fentanyl....but we have to keep in mind, the kid CHOSE to buy drugs and CHOSE to take them. Yes they can still be "good kids" who make bad choices. My comment above (I'm the PP) was more about how this kid did not have any warning signs. Doing well in school, had friends, had involved parents, had hobbies, etc. I think many many people posting on this board can relate to that, regardless of race. His parents had no idea, until he was dead in his bedroom.
Fentanyl kills the casual user, as discussed earlier. High school kids make mistakes. Would I be shocked, outraged and upset if my kid was buying a few pills of *whatever* OF COURSE. But I will not paint this child who died as a bad egg. That allows people to dodge any sort of actual effort in helping to STOP more kids from getting sick or dying.
Fentanyl seems to have changed the calculus. If we're truly at a point now where a single mistake results in death, that seems to call for more drastic action. So by all means let's make sure there's narcan everywhere. But the climate of lassitude at these schools needs to change too. It's broken windows all over again, where the lack of enforcement of rules creates a chaotic atmosphere that leads to more people hurt. Pay for hall monitors. Pay for better security. Shut down the vaping. And yes, start getting the police more involved. None of this is acceptable, and none of it is inevitable.

I think what "good kids" means that can't be explicitly stated is well-off white kids from stable homes.
You put a photo of a smiling white mom, dad, and teen in front of a stranger and a photo of a smiling black mom, dad, and teen in front of them and ask them to pick which kid is a drug user, they will pick the black teen most of the time.
My nephew was addicted to Oxy then Heroin and ODd several times. If you put him in a lineup, no one would pick him as the drug addict. Except he was. He got a sports injury and got addicted to his pain pills. Then when he couldn't get those, he moved on to heroin.
I 100% associate opioid use with white people. Pill popping white people. My experiencing with opioids portrayed in media and personally has been white people. I literally never even have heard of a black Persian OD on opioids, but I’m sure it happens.
What I do not associate drug use with is Asians of any part of the continent.
Weed with LA and Blacks.
