Virginia Tech will always be the 3rd best public and 5th best university in Virginia though. Meanwhile UMD is the best public university (and flagship) and 2nd best university in the state, behind a medical behemoth that is currently ranked #7 (over-ranked but certainly not a mediocre school to be ranked behind).
UMD gets priority over Maryland's state education budget. There's no the major public university in the state. Virginia's get split over UVA, W&M, VT, VCU and GMU. UMD has far more potential.
That's not how it works. And UVA is almost self-sufficient now in budgeting. Anyhow, whatever you are trying to claim about budgeting is negated by the fact that on the list being discussed UVA is 25 and UMD at 55. On the USNWR list of top public universities, also released today, UVA is 3 and UMD is 26. https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-universities/top-public. Big difference

Winners
-- Princeton (always lovely to be #1 by oneself)
-- JHU - all Bloomberg's $$ is paying off for them
-- Wake Forest is higher than I expected (plus having a great football season). Feels "hot"
-- Rice and Wash U above Cornell, Columbia and Notre Dame
Losers
-- Columbia, but they made their bed...
-- UNC and UVA downward trend, upward trend Michigan and Florida (even though still ranked lower than UNC)
-- Expected UT Austin to be higher
-- Tufts on a downward trajectory
Everything else kind of washed with previous years, imo
Neither UVA nor UMich has a downward trend on US News. UVA has been holding very steady and UMich has generally been on an upswing. Idiot.
Actually, in this same USNWR announcement, UVA also moved up to no. 3 in top public universities in America. https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-universities/top-public. So it's 25 when lumped in with all the other schools but no 3 in the public school list. https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-universities/top-public
The only thing tied with Michigan is its USNWR ranking. Academically it trails at just about everything else. I did notice that McIntire fell to #8 in the business school rankings. There are 6 schools here including IU!

How is UVA ranked at the same level as USC/NYU and Michigan? Just comparing it to Michigan, Pretty much all programs at Michigan are top notch. UVA's engineering and CS are middling. Can someone explain?
P.S. Don't jump on me. I have a kid at UVA.![]()

Notre Dame is Ivy level.
Almost, but not quite!
Notre Dame would never want to join the Ivy League anyway! It is happy to be ranked right there and fully independent to print football $$!
The Ivy League isn't all it is cracked up to be. Georgetown wouldn't even give up its basketball TV $$ to join.
Remember that the ancient 8 really is just an old but now low-level athletic conference!
This! A top school that has so much more to offer than the stuffy ivies. Love it.
No one would choose Notre Dame over an Ivy with the exception of someone who values a Catholic education.
Don't forget its lack of diversity

Remember that Notre Dame is Catholic so has limited appeal here

Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:I still don't get why the service academies are grouped with the liberal arts schools.
Because they don't have doctoral programs.
They should have their own group - Service academy group
but nobody would care about the ranking so
