OR the ones complaining about Dr. McKnight’s trip fail to understand, 1) There is a national shortage of people applying to teaching colleges, 2) the number of people leaving or retiring from the profession continues to grow, 3) MCPS already recruits from the DC metro area, 4) They are competing with every other nearby MD and vA county/city and DC for teachers from DC area colleges and universities, and 5) minority teachers are needed. Doing so with a university she gas a personal relationship with and can serve as a shining example of the success that could be had is also wise.

So what is the real issue????

This school has less than 50 students graduate a year in education. MCPS has recruiters. So, what was the purpose of this visit? Did she even meet with students?

We don’t know, that’s just the point that many have been making. It a whole assumption to believe that this trip wasn’t worthwhile. Just as its an assumption that she didn’t meet with students, or multitude of other things that have been brought up. It was one photo on a tweet, and people have made it seem like she is grossly misusing district travel funds.

Please enlighten us, what was the purpose of that visit? We keep asking and you keep deflecting.

+1 Dr. McKnight is also CUTTING teacher positions for next year. When MCPS teachers are being given notice that their job has been cut, there seems to be little need to travel out of state to recruit teachers.

50 or so students a year graduate from this program. Lets be real. How many would move to MoCo, especially with housing costs to teach here? 1-2. Is that worth a trip for the head of MCPS vs. a recruiter?

If people don’t feel safe that find, they are free to wear mask or not attend. But this action has no bearing on McKnight’s leadership at this point.

Yes, its mask optional but she should be wearing one to set a good example.

As an elected official, her behavior sets the tone.

Good example for who??? No one has to wear a mask anymore. It’s not even a CDC recommendation except in specific cases. There is no example to be set unless she were going into a hospital. The district is advocating testing before returning from Spring Break.

Its not about has to, its about being a decent human being. There is no mandatory testing after break and its all voluntary.

By this logic everyone who is not masking is not a decent human being. And if that’s your take, then this conversation is pointless, because plenty of reasonable rational people who supported the use of mask, also now agree that are not as readily needed.

True. Montgomery County is the only covid hot spot in Maryland right now. Not masking are idiots.

Interestingly enough in MCPS, its the richer schools that are the hotbeds.

You believing its not needed is not most people. Most people are still masking indoors when going to stores and other places.

She is a public official.

+1 As a health care worker, we have seen an uptick of COVID.

I wonder if Dr. McKnight has a plan so the return from Spring Break isn’t as disastrous as Winter Break.
