I’ll tell her to stop being lazy and wheel herself, with the one hand that works, down to the DMV, even though she doesn’t have the documentation to get an ID in VA. That’ll show her!
Maybe her family could help her? How has she managed to vote in any and all elections up to this point if she is that incapable? There were prior voter ID requirements in Va not that long ago.
What about the people in her situation who don’t have wealthy family nearby?
Expired ID has been acceptable in the past. This is a new proposed requirement.
Why do you need to be wealthy to help someone vote by mail? Why do you need to be wealthy to help someone to get the DMV to get a free ID card? Presumably they either had help getting to a polling station or help filling out a mail in ballot in the past.
It’s more than a trip to the DMV for a free ID card. Stop being obtuse.
Oh yeah, you're right. You have to fill out this form and get your picture taken. For free. With assistance if needed.

I don’t think you understand how rights work.
Yeah, actually I do.
Then you should know we don’t deprive people of their rights based on a disability.
No one is depriving her of her any rights based on a disability.
Really? How exactly? By requiring what most states require, including many states that have been run by Ds for decades?
Republicans want to deprive her.

Why didn't you do this all along?
Ding ding ding. You'd think that would be the obvious thing to do, wouldn't you? The excuses are just... mind-numbing.
DP
Maybe because it costs $555 and is a PITA?
I just looked this up. It costs $41 to change your name in VA. Any more excuses?

PP was talking about updating naturalization documents.

It sounds like the MIL is *already* naturalized. Seems she has needed to change her name for some time, however (four husbands ago??).This is simply not the concern of 99.9% of people.
The point is there are a variety of scenarios where someone may be a registered voter but not have a valid photo ID.
It’s an added burden that is trying to fix a problem that doesn’t exist.
I completely disagree. This is not a problem for the vast majority of people. At all. And most Americans agree with that.
Majorities of whites (74%), blacks (69%) and other minorities (82%) say voters should be required to show photo identification before being allowed to vote.

Why didn't you do this all along?
Because she didn’t need it to get a license before she stopped driving.
But she was supposed to file the correct paperwork all along, regardless of her intent to drive/get a new driver's license.
Dang. $555 to change your name?
