op needs to come back and update us. Has the dog moved in?

I have known pit bulls that I trusted 100% and ones that I wouldn't go near. The same can be said for several chihuahuas. I've only ever been bitten by a chihuahua and the owner acted like it was no big deal because of the size of the dog. I don't agree with that. Any dog that bites needs professional intervention and training and if it's a second bite I understand why most counties put the dog down.

Do what you feel comfortable with, OP--build a fence, don't let your kids interact with the dog.

Np here. Most of thebpit bulls you meet aren't purebred in the slightest so this is silly.

My friends have a Staffordshire terrier and boy do I not like that dog. Barks constantly, clearly anxious all the time. I do not trust that dog around my kid.. So having some kind of purebred dog doesn't fix the behavior problems with these bully breeds at all.

But they exist and are recognized by AKC. You don't like one dog and therefore all dogs that are Staffordshire terrier are no good? HMMM

I’ve met pit bulls that seemed nice, but I also know someone who owns a very sweet pit bull who was maimed by a rescue pit bull that he took in. He said he would never have another one after his current dog dies. The dogs have been bred to be aggressive and it’s a roll of the dice, especially when a rescue is involved and you don’t know their background or why they were surrendered.

I love dogs (I just spent the weekend with children and grandchildren and 4 large dogs in my house), but I don’t think OP is overreacting.

I think the opposite especially as I lived in England. The people I saw with Pits were skin heads who were members of right wing parties that wanted to make the UK all white. Thinking about it, I've never seen a "minority" person with a Pit. I'm sure there must be one somewhere with a Pit but I've never met them.

You must not have spent much time in minority neighborhoods.

I grew up in a neighborhood full of minorities and I'm a POC myself.

I was attacked by a pitt bull owned by the family I babysat for when I was 15. It was trying to get the food I made for the kids and then just went nuts and clamped down on my arm. I've been around Goldens and terriers my entire life and have never been so terrified. I know I am lucky he just let go. I had been interacting with that dog regularly for months.

Never, ever going to be okay with those dogs.
