People panic and make bad decisions when something horrible happens. If they were struggling and he pushed her off of him and she fell and he panicked and ran, he would have (correctly) assumed that the police would think it was fishy that he ran. Guy was also apparently mentally unstable and more likely to make bad impulsive decisions.

I'm not postulating this to frame him as good or a victim BTW, just that its clear they had a volatile relationship and volatility in the wilderness is not a good thing.

But it is in his self interest to keep his mouth shut. And if he came to his senses 8 hours away from where she fell then he could have probably just kept driving, wondering WTF to do, and landed back in Florida with his family asking for help. Either way, he doesn't come out looking anything but bad IMO.

They did not leave her with him in this particular case.

I agree that inpatient treatment infrastructure (assuming a person can be convinced to enter it) is greatly needed. There are many obstacles to that but definitely something that society needs to prioritize. Based on currently available public resources and current dispatch policies, I don’t think the police department is responsible for the outcome here.

Laundrie allegedly told police he and Petito both suffered from a mental condition and that neither take medication. Police determined the altercation did not rise to the level of domestic assault, and Laundrie and Petito were told to separate for the night, the report said. Laundrie was given a hotel room.

Do you think the police near some responsibility for this? They left this vulnerable, mentally unstable woman with a man they knew was also mentally unstable and verbally/physically attacking her. Shortly thereafter, he kills her.

We need something better than the police for these mental health calls.

Not necessarily true but obviously “no body” murder cases are much harder to prosecute. It’s not impossible, depending on other evidence. Especially nowadays with surveillance footage. But it does seem like they were in a remote area.

Not sure what investigators found but if they believe blood was cleaned they can use an (admittedly imperfect) tool that will show blood splatter patterns or areas where blood was present. Obviously depending on the results of that, it might be explained or unexplained. A blood splatter pattern consistent with a gunshot is not “explained” by documented incidents of scratching, for instance. This tool has to be backed up by other investigative techniques and forensic testing. But it is a starting point. Cadaver indicators would also be unexplained, as well as things like hair with post mortem banding, etc.

He may also get arrested on obstruction of justice type charges, failing to report, or tampering with a crime scene if they can substantiate that. We’ll have to see what digital forensics reveal. That usually takes some time, more than a few days. Could be a month.

There’s also a chance he wasn’t directly responsible for what ultimately happened. His behavior is suspicious but there is a chance.

That's not what happened with Suzanne Morphew's husband or Jennifer Dulos' husband. Neither a body or hint of a body has been found in either case. Although in the former's case they found a hotel room absolutely covered in bleach. I think in the later they found some blood in her garage.

But both are/were on trial for murder of their spouses/ex-spouse.

Those cases had an abundance of circumstantial and forensic evidence. In the Dulos case, there are materials (rags, clothes) with large quantities of the victim's blood and tissue.

Didn't the Dulos husband kill himself?
