Not that unusual for a small town teacher, in my experience. My mom retired from teaching with a pension and nothing else.

The guy is a governor, not a teacher. Hasn’t been a teacher since 2006. Something is seriously wrong with this picture.

The Carters were facing possible bankruptcy when they left the WH. And pensions for Presidents didn't' start until 1958. Truman had to knuckle down and start writing when he left office as one of the 5 poorest former presidents. He had a 1500/yr Army pension and turned down corporate jobs.
Of those 5, one was a teacher (Arthur) and two (Garfield and Wilson) were college presidents.

My wife grew up kind of poor. We’ve obtained the status of “Midwest rich” (comfortable but nowhere near wealthy). One Halloween she started giving out full sized candy bars and it made her really happy to be able to do that. Now we’re a popular stop for trick or treaters!
