How is the trend flat in MD if we have over 900 new cases every day? It's very confusing!

More testing = more cases that are found and identified. It’s a good thing. It can show where the cases are concentrated and health authorities can keep closer tabs on those areas. That’s why raw number of cases isn’t used as a metric - we can’t compare to even a month ago when testing wasn’t so widely available. Now you can go to a test site or CVS and get a swab and have results in a few days. In early May we could test a few hundred people a day at most and they were all people with symptoms, so the percent positive rate was pretty high. Now we can test people with only vague symptoms or who are just worried about a possible exposure, so the raw number of cases identified is going up, but the positive percentage is going down.

And I know you are asking and what about Sweden since the two countries implemented entirely different approach, for those who did not follow -
Norway locked down, Sweden never did. Keep in mind that the Sweden is almost exactly double the population of Noraway
Sweden - 10.23M
Norway - 5.3M

You be the judge.

Sweden's daily deaths are also falling noticeably. Everyone is following the same arch regardless of the severity of the shutdowns.

All this reopenings only brings the rest of the world to Sweden's approach.

Case can mean just a positive test without any symptoms whatsoever. It can also be false positive as they only test once and as you know, no test brand 100% error proof. Margin error is quite substantial.

Positive Coronavirus Test Rate Dropping Steadily In Virginia

Indicators show downward trends in Virginia COVID-19 cases and percentage of positive tests

While total cases continue to increase, data from the VDH coronavirus dashboard show the seven-day average for confirmed and probable cases dropped in late May.

Also, the percentage of positive results from COVID-19 testing is down. The seven-day average for percent of positive test results was at 10.1% as of Tuesday, which is the most recent figure provided by VDH. That's down from a peak of 22.2% on April 19.

The positivity rate in Prince George’s County has dropped by more than 66%, from a high of 41.96% to a current rate of 14.1%. Montgomery County has dropped by more than 62%, from a high of 32.64% to a current rate of 12.3%.
