Given other context clues (the cognitive tests, family history, everything about his current functional problems), monthly infusions of an Alzheimer’s treatment seem more likely. Google says there are a couple of options and this one is monthly:

My mom has cancer and has bruises exactly like that on her hand. So did the late Queen. My mom even made the joke that “it was from shaking too many hands.”
