Ukraine is an independent actor fighting for their own survival. russia has repeatedly made its intentions clear and has explicitly stated that they want to wipe the very idea of Ukraine and Ukrainians off the map. There were well-founded fears that had this been more widely known at the time, Germany and other countries would NOT have helped Ukraine as much as they did, fearing a backlash of their public opinion.

There is so much that goes on that we don't know about in this war: lots of internal disagreements, everyone spying on everyone else to keep them honest, keep tabs on Ukraine so it doesn't go on a rampage with the weapons we give them (and it's understandable they would want to), etc...

Zelensky being such a gifted communicator helped immeasurably, and that's not something Putin could have predicted. Z rose to the occasion in the most remarkable way, and has lobbied nearly every country in the world to get compassion, promises of support or at least, neutrality.

This could so easily have gone wrong. Putin miscalculated, but not by that much.
