These type of kidnappings are common in Mexico and South America. I personally know a Colombian family who had a family member kidnapped. Ransom is paid and person is released.

Yes but there are ransom notes. There's wasn't one in this case until days later- and was proved fake. Then others came in...

New question (I think- I can’t read through all of the pages of this thread)- I heard on the news that the FBI has said that the decision whether or not to pay a ransom demand is up to the family.

My only knowledge of these situations is from tv/movies/books, and in those fictional settings the FBI always seems in control of how the family responds to kidnapping demands.

So I guess this was always wrong? Or is the FBI posturing in the case of Nancy Guthrie bc the family is going against their instructions by posting a video saying they’ll pay ransom?

I'm going with psychotic loner neighbor who would watch her coming and going. Was it a robbery gone wrong? Did he want her ATM card and PIN number? I'm sure the FBI is not telling us all they know.

Whoever got these images is the hero here. They almost certainly will lead to the identification of this person.

It is clearly planned and not opportunistic but it also doesn't seem like it is an experienced kidnapper or organized crime.
