There really is no reason the school day should be shortened on in person days. Just lazy.

YES! There IS something that can be done — vote for Miranda Turner in the caucus in May. She is running for the open seat on the school board. She has been advocating for our kids since the start. She’s smart, reasonable (not one of the crazy open school people) — she understands all the issues facing APS and most importantly - she puts the STUDENTS first. Check out her website and sign up for her newsletter mirandaturner.org

The caucus will be held in May - ONLINE - so no excuse not to vote.

She is one of the APE leaders. By default, that makes her a crazy open schools person.

Not at all. The open schools people are going to be born out to be not crazy. (OK, some of them are. ) But the ones who want schools open with ventilation and masks (like Miranda) are right. We've done huge damage to our kids by staying closed so long. She's got my vote.

LOL. “With ventilation”? Stop trying to rewrite history. APE wasn’t pushing for ventilation FFS. They’ve been pushing to go back - no matter what. Before we had ventilation, vaccines, heading into a surge, no testing, etc.

You are forgetting where we were back in August with these crazy open schools people like MT. Totally irresponsible.

Ummm. We absolutely should have opened in august. Case rates were super low and we saw from Europe that schools were opening safely. Stop trying to rewrite history that it was just some crazies calling for school to open august. The science and data absolutely supported opening, especially elementary. I wish we would have started open and reverted to DL over the winter surge (w elementary still being in-person). But whatever. We are in the present. I’d like to have a board member advocating a default position of open even if I may disagree at certain points (like during the surge). 1 board member aggressive on opening is good. The other 4 will fight tooth and nail to avoid 5 days until all kids are vaccinated. I’m sure duran’s response to Sb 1303 is to figure out how to get a waiver. I’d like to ask the candidates whether they think the SB should vote on a waiver from complying w SB1303.

No, we did not have the “science and data” back then which is why we all laughed about the dumb signs.

And they were pushing to open right through the surge. Totally irrational.

We are opening 5 days this fall. Stop with the fictional fearmongering.

I thought we should have opened in fall and then DL over holiday through winter surge. And then I was okay waiting until teachers were vaccinated. All APS staff has had a chance to be vaccinated and kids need more than 2 days of school. APS isn’t even giving our kids a full day of school when they are in the building! I’ll be voting for Miranda just to see someone challenge Duran and our do-nothing school board. I joined APE recently and they are generally reasonable other than a few RWNJs. We do need a school board member that out students first. This is not the election for the PTA mom that is in the bag for the teachers union.

You do know that the Return to school debate is over and will be long gone by the time the new board member gets into office? You should have some other reason to vote for Miranda.

Why fight this when everyone knows that schools all around the country were able to open safely with masks and distancing?? The decisions to keep schools closed was ridiculous. What if every other essential business just shut down?

Duran will look for any loophole possible to avoid putting forth the work to get kids back full time. It's just too hard for him. He needs to go. Give us his $
250K salary and $700/month car allowance and get someone in the seat who actually cares.

I don’t know much about the school board candidates, and I’m not a member of APE, so I can’t comment on who is “crazy” and who isn’t. But I agree that the decision to keep kids out of schools for a full year will definitely be one we regret when we look back on this time.

That and the decision to hire Duran. Both Duran and Loft have done nothing but damage to our kids for the past year. An entire quarter with zero instruction, no plan to try to get the kids back in school full-time. Duran doesn't even know the status of waitlists for kids that want to switch to hybrid. One survery done back in the fall without any updates, etc etc.. They are AWFUL and have been so lazy throughout all of this. So much easier to just keep it as is and strip kids of their learning. We should file a class action lawsuit.

+1. The decision to keep kids out of schools for a full year - especially early elementary - will be regarded as on of the greatest self-inflicted blows against public education in American history.

It’s going to be back to normal. Some will stay private, many will not. There’s lots of growth projected in early grades and there has been for the last couple years.

I bet 90% will stay private once they see how much better the education is.
