Not necessarily. Ivy admissions are not a given for any of the Big-Three. Not as many GDS students get admitted to Harvard as the school’s reputation would suggest.

Neither school is the deciding factor for elite college admissions - that is primarily the result of the parents’ pedigree. Both schools have a disproportionate represents of parents from elite colleges, hence their admissions records. Self selection is always a strong factor in preserving the status of the elite and thag is exactly what the Big 3 is about.

How do they know? I don't remember this being a question on the application.

Eh, depends on which college you went to. If you went to Harvard/Yale/Princeton or Amherst/Swarthmore/Williams, you knew about Georgetown Day. Coming from CA, I went to one of the competitive SLACs and definitely knew of the DC prep school scene and all the schools that inhabited it. See the thread on Pomona in the College forum--if you haven't heard of Pomona, that says more about you than about the school.

Yes! Lived in Bay Area and Pomona grads were the most interesting. Stanford? Meh

OMG so tired of this fight but I'll chime in. We have kids at GDS who are happy and doing well academically, socially and emotionally. Our closest family friends have kids at Sidwell who are also happy and thriving.
Both are amazing schools. Both have pressure cooker elements., smart kids, great teachers, and a cohort of fantastic kids.

Honestly they are way more similar than different. If you are lucky enough to get to choose between them, talk to current families and have your kid visit/shadow (though one of my kids had a bad shadow day and ended up loving the school). I'd also try to track down families with kids in your kid's current class at both schools. Each grade has it's own vibe and chemistry and that can make for a good fit or a bad one. Good luck.
