Me too! I was skeptical about Thailand until I went once for work and fell in love with it. It's definitely on my bucket list for when the kids are old enough to enjoy a vacation with that much travel time and jetlag.

This is why I am not going there.

We finally made a trip last Summer to Hawaii (Maui to be exact). We went, we spent, we saw what we needed to see and never need to return - to any of the islands.

There are MUCH nicer beaches on the east coast, but DC people tend to think beach choices are limited to either a boardwalk or OBX - which actually works quite well for the rest of us.

Seriously though, what is ugly about this beach?? Fwiw, I grew up in a Jersey shore town so I know those beaches well (much less nicer than OBX). My husband grew up outside of Boston and went to the Cape and he knows those beaches. The water is too cold to swim all summer. We rented a house in Nantucket one summer recently and our kids refused to swim much because the water was so damn cold. It felt like a waste.

We went a house right on the beach in Duck every year for 2 weeks. It's about 25k for the two weeks so it's not cheap. But it's nice and relaxing. I don't get this notion that some posters have on here that the OBX is white trash. Wildwood NJ, Seaside Heights, OC Maryland, those are white trash beaches.

Brown water and dirty sand. I would never call any beach white trash (also I’m not white, so for me I don’t see the difference you do). I’ve experienced clear blue water and clean white sand. Once I’ve seen those these beaches just seem very gross in comparison.

Pretty much anywhere in Europe more than once and some places even once. I've lived in Europe and been all over it. I really don't get the excitement about the culture or the architecture. Someone the other day recommended Vienna (Austria, not VA) to another poster and man I have NEVER been to such a boring city when mediocre food. I honestly think Vienna VA might be better.

Paris and Rome were fairly decent. There are are a few old monuments or tours worth seeing. The countryside of Italy, France and Switzerland are *ok* but get old quickly. Greek islands are nice but the water in the mediterranean is WAY too cold to swim in, so beaches quickly become no fun.

Eastern Europe need not even be mentioned. Just don't go unless you want to get raided by gypsies.

The food in Europe isn't even that great. Contemporary american cuisine has largely surpassed the famous traditional European restaurants. You have to hit at least a 2 michelin star restaurant to experience something you can't find in DC.

London is like America but with people saying "c*nt" more often and with food options consisting of sausage, beer, and indian food.

Belgium has some street liege waffles and stronger beer, but I can make liege waffles here at home.

It's to the point now where the only city I'm maybe up for going to is Amsterdam because you can smoke weed there. But you can probably do that here soon too.

I mean, I'd go if someone paid me but...Hawaii (rather explore the Caribbean or Fiji,. etc)

I thought this, until I went to both OBX and MA beaches last year, so the comparison was fresh in my mind. I had sworn by OBX, but the water was uncomfortably freezing end July, and the lack of waves were such that our surfing lesson had to be cancelled. The sand was so burning hot on the beach, flip flops were insufficient - and there were dragon flies everywhere (apparently from lack of breeze in over 100 degree F weather). I found the exact opposite in MA - beautiful, clear beaches, and less people on the beaches - the water was perfect, and more than enough activities for everyone of all ages, IF we wanted. No one was afraid of being alone or quiet, or whatever other PP claimed. I know some people are married to OBX, but we no longer are.
