They like them so much more than the cartoon versions. Sure 3 year olds don't have the best taste, but mine vote for the live action every time.

When she smiles, she does look like a convincing Ariel. Other times, though, she's definitely not cute. Wideset eyes might sound like they should be a lovely feature, but they can look strange.
Who do you consider cute and worthy enough to play Ariel, if not this girl?
I have no problem with picking her. I also think she's a strange looking girl.
Bizarre--she looks like a lot of cute black girls. Not sure what's so strange about her look.
NP. I am all about her being Ariel but don't understand willfully acting like you don't know what PP is talking about. Her eyes are set apart much farther than the average human's. It gives her a unique look. One kind of appropriately aquatic honestly. She's a pretty girl, but her facial structure is unique. Which is probably a part of why she is a celebrity as 'uniquely attractive' is a good thing to have on your resume.
PP again. I'm black, and she looks like a lot of cute black girls I know. I don't know about her eyes being wide apart. She doesn't have European features/bone structure though--is that what you think looks strange?
Dp. I’m black as well and she looks similar to black girls I know bc of her style and hair. Her facial features do not resemble the black girls I know. It’s very clear her eyes are set wide apart and that’s what everyone is clearly stating. It adds to her features to some ppl and hinders her features to others. To say that you cannot see that is being willfully blind so you can win an argument. And actually her nose is a European feature more than a black feature. I’m for her being Ariel and I’ll support a black woman in the role but I’m still not blind.

Zendaya but that’s just bc I really like her. This girl is fine too.

I love her! She is wonderful. I don’t think she fits Ariel though

+1
Eric needs to be able to sing right? I wonder if Noah can sing.
Off the top of my head the only young actor I can think of that sings is KJ Apa, though I don't think he's a particularly great actor.

Every single person on this thread questioning and disliking the choice needs to read this.
I’m 100% on board.
But also, I don’t think she’s very cute. Maybe I need to see more pictures of her...?
I would like to see Prince Eric be from Spain btw. Or Greece. Something Mediterranean!
Pp you responded too. Initially I didn’t think she was that cute and I’m not a fan of her voice. However, after all the hate/backlash and beautiful drawings/renderings something in my mind clicked. I want to fight for this girl now. I want this movie to do so well that all the racist foam even more at the mouth.
Are you the one that keeps saying she's not cute? I really don't understand that--I think she's cute as a button. She has a very sweet, innocent look. Even the director said as much:
“After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role,” Marshall said in a statement."
