OP, I'm also divorced, and I have two young children.
For me, I would never want to have to answer the question "why wasn't I (child) there." The correct answer isn't "well your dad....". It will likely be important to your kid that she/he was there, and so you should put them first. Do what you have to do to make it happen, including short term annoyance or inconvenience for long term gain. It may also help continue goodwill with your ex, whom you have to interact with routinely for his visitation.
