And on Saturday evening, Trump called Carter to talk about it. It was the first time they’d spoken, Carter said. He said Trump said he is particularly concerned about how China is “getting ahead of us.”

Carter agreed that’s true.

“And do you know why? I normalized diplomatic relations with China in 1979. Since 1979 do you know how many times China has been at war with anybody? None. And we have stayed at war,” he said.

The U.S., Carter said, has been at war for all but 16 years of its 242-year history. (China and Vietnam actually fought a brief border war in early 1979, weeks after normalization of U.S.-China relations.)

He called the United States “the most warlike nation in the history of the world,” because of a tendency to try to force others to “adopt our American principles.”

Carter suggested that instead of war, China has been investing in its own infrastructure, mentioning that China has 18,000 miles of high-speed railroad.

“How many miles of high-speed railroad do we have in this country?”

Zero, the congregation answered.

“We have wasted I think $3 trillion,” Carter said of American military spending. “… It’s more than you can imagine. China has not wasted a single penny on war and that’s why they’re ahead of us. In almost every way.

“And I think the difference is if you take $3 trillion and put it in American infrastructure you’d probably have $2 trillion leftover. We’d have high-speed railroad. We’d have bridges that aren’t collapsing, we’d have roads that are maintained properly. Our education system would be as good as that of say South Korea or Hong Kong.

There is no way this crap is real.

And reduce climate change. Massive Chinese production is killing the earth. Surely you know that? And China has zero environmental standards! Why do you Liberals support that???

Except the GOP doesn't want an education system as good as anyone in the worlds. They would never capture another vote.

I am a Trump supporter. Some of the "lies" the MSM attributed to him, in my opinion, are mostly braggadocio by a salesman. You can't always take his words literally. However on this latest trade issue, he went too far. He is either lying or ignorant of how trade works.

- Who pays the tariff?
The importer, aka, American companies pay the tariff. I don't understand why he has to lie about this.

- Trade deficit doesn't equate to "ripping us off" by $500 billion dollar.
Everyone runs a trade deficit with your local grocery store. But that doesn't mean your grocery store is ripping you off. China buys a lot of US treasuries with the trade surplus. With the reduced trade activities, it will add pressure to the interest rate.

Hello fellow Ben Shapiro fan.

I am all for getting tough on China. But, Trump needs to be honest with fellow Americans. This trade war will hurt both China and US. Sure, it might hurt China more, but it will hurt US's economy too. China will not pay for the increase tariff, American companies will. It's a tax increase on US importers. GDP will be lower, and the stock market will lose value.

Why start now?

Ding! Ding! DING!!!!!

By making manufacturing more expensive in China, one of those other Asian countries are just going to fill the void. The manufacturing isn't going to come back to America.

Just today, GoPro proves you wrong,
you hideous Liberal liar.

GoPro didn't bring manufacturing back to the US. They moved it to Mexico, idiot.

The made in China label spells slavery to me. Aren't Americans supposed to oppose slavery? Or if it's Chinese slaves, it doesn't much matter as long as prices stay super cheap at Costco.

I certainly don’t.

Glad you look at labels before buying any product and never buy a product that carries "Made in China" sticker.

It feels like you don’t understand how supply chains work in a global economy.

The president would have been better served working through the TPP where other countries would have been participating with the US as a unified voice, but that was the first thing he did as president, pull out of TPP negotiations.

The president has pledge more money to US farmers (from where????) to compensate them for not selling things to China.

He said he would buy US goods and use them for humanitarian aid. But I thought he also said he would cut humanitarian aid. Not very reassuring.

And we will be doing so using money borrowed from China.

What I find so frustrating about this all is that the self-inflicted wounds are unnecessary. I don't have an issue with fighting back against bad faith Chinese trade practices. I have an issue with stupid strategy and bad faith American negotiating practices.

Trump doesn't know what he's doing. He's not even trying to negotiate a trade deal. Instead he seems to be engaging in a petty power play, the sole goal of which is to try and force Chinese supplication towards him. It does not take a genius, let alone a foreign policy scholar, to understand that threats, ultimatums and insults are not going to magically get China to give in. There is no longer a win win exit scenario. We both lose.
