American movies are huge hits around the world, despite people of different ethnicities in those countries not being able to "relate" to the American characters.

Truly, you should get out a little more and break out of the stereotype of the insular American. I mean, seriously, do you only watch movies with your own demographic in them? I guess that rules out all superhero movies (who can relate to them?). Or movies about East Coast or West Coast or Southern or Midwestern folks, depending on where you are from.

Some stories, especially those involving romance, run across cultures. What American doesn't relate to that anxious feeling of meeting potential in-laws? How many of us have been intimidated by the parent of our SO? How many of us have had awkward run-ins with our SO's ex? How many of us would have trouble marrying someone of a completely different class? These are universal themes.

I loved the Cosby show growing up, as I did Friends and Seinfeld. I also happen to love Jane Austen. How was I ever able to relate to some of those stories from over a hundred years ago, from a different culture/race?

Just watched the movie with DH and the kids. Really enjoyed it.

Saw this with my DH last night. Really fun and romantic!

However I am annoyed at the liberals think-piecing this to death. It’s just a movie. Chill!

- mother still didn't ok the marriage
- dude and lady went back to wherever they were before
- sequel

Not so well.

Nick didn’t pretend to be poor.

She speaks the language fluently and is a master mah jong player so that’s not just looking Asian.

Nick’s mom doesn’t think she’s a gold digger, just not suitable as someone who grew up in that world.
