Subject: Spring Travel Soccer Tryouts 2018
Specific to ASA, at the lower ages, there isn't generally a ton of difference between the 1st and 2nd (red and white) teams. They typically have the same coach and play in the same league and the level of play is similar. A lot of the kids on both played up the year before, played with other travel clubs and/or did Academies put on by ASA.
Of the girls on our Gold team last year, 4 were moved to higher teams after a year, so there is movement.

Are they doing anything for the 2006 boys?
FPYC tryouts are generally in mid to late May. If interested in a specific team, contacting the current coach is probably the best idea.

I have boys, and don't know much about the options for girls. For your son, I'd want to know who was coaching his year at WSC. If it's Ossie (and if your son can handle "gruff" and you can handle "spotty communication"), that would be my first choice. Otherwise (holding aside logistics considerations), probably Achilles/Stoddert and then Jouons and then WSC/DCYFC and then PPA among the DC options. BSC/Arlington over all of them if he makes their top team; otherwise, I'd slot those two in with Achilles and Stoddert. This is all really rough, though--certain coaches are great for some kids and terrible for others; it really is about finding the right fit. Hit a bunch of tryouts and see what clicks.
Thank you. I didn't see PPA on the prior list. Where do they practice and what league, do you know? My DC can play on top teams, that would not be the issue. Stoddert and DCYFC look to be closest in NW, but there seems to be a big difference between those two.
PPA is kind of all over the place. They've expanded really rapidly. You'd probably want to contact them directly to see if they'd have anything of interest (level/location) for you.
For a top player in upper NW DC, I'd recommend tryouts with BSC, Arlington, Stoddert, and Achilles. He always could join a DCYFC (or PPA or Jouons) team later if the tryouts don't yield appealing options.

I agree with this. I have boys and we live in Bethesda. We've played the Bethesda 2nd team and there is a gigantic drop-off between their first and other teams. I've heard that Achilles is having trouble keeping quality up with two teams since it's a bit of a cult of personality. The main coach (I don't remember what his name is) is great, but as you can see, they go from EDP to SAM select, which is a big drop. It screams "I care about the elite players and the other guys can do whatever."
Achilles is a different club and kids have to like Coach Sal’s serious style to enjoy it. The coaching is great and kids do think he’s great. No kid has left who’s made the team. The club started from nothing two years ago, so not every kid was as strong as the training and expectations would suggest, and that’s why I posted here. I agree the club will benefit from a few more strong players in a few of the ages. But make no mistake, there’s real talent there as a strong base.
As for the EDP/Sam Select divide, there are a few factors. One is the the club is two years old and filled out looking for solid players regardless of age, not for a set number per age- this was complicated because Sal doesn’t advertise well because he believes that if he builds a great club, kids will seek it out. This is coming true, but they’re not filled out yet at some ages. Also, most Achilles sam Select teams are over half playing one or two years up, while most Achilles EDP players are closer to on age. But also, any kid can play Sam or EDP throughout the season and a lot of mixing happens at practice too.
A good number of Achilles players have chosen it over much better known top teams. We have and we’re very thankful. But like the previous poster mentioned, more quality players would fill out the club nicely.
For sure. They are punching way above their weight for how new they are and playing some of the most proactive soccer in the area. Players have left DCU to play for Coach Sal

Is Bethesda South 06 continuing to next season? There was talk that it was disbanding.
Tough to say, I've heard some people say yes and others no. Really up to what Yuri (spelling?) does. I've heard some of their high quality players will be joining various DAs so it may be hard to recruit more to remain at same level and I also heard that they are willing to stay 1 more year. He could probably add from 2nd team but don't think that team is as strong. Hard to know who to believe. If you have someone interested in playing, reach out to him and then let us know what their status is for next year.

I noticed the near left corner side of the field was reserved for the predetermined boys who are just scrimmaging and waiting for tryouts to be done. They are already on the Red team. Lots of high fives and pep talks from coaches to this group. Outside of the predetermined boys who the coaches already know, the player evaluation has been spotty at best with several overlooked players not progressing.
Big turnout though and they will have no problem filling their red, white, blue, black, gold and silver (geez) teams.
I'm sure some kids are overlooked - that's definitely the nature of the tryouts. Hopefully, they will still show enough to catch the coach's eye and make a team. Completely new to Arlington here so couldn't tell if any fields were "reserved" but my son was moved at least 5 times including the near left corner field over the last two days. He did say that it was more difficult to play on the field where all other boys seemed to know each other (really had to fight for possession as the boys tended to pass only to known teammates, which makes sense for players this young). As with any tryout, it's always difficult to come in from outside the club and/or be a completely unknown entity to coaches. As to the numbers, I expected there would be more kids. Curious to see what others think.
