Arlington Soccer Association apparently thinks so. It submitted an application for DA expansion back in December and will receive an answer in February.

In addition to applying for a full academy for the boys, with all six of the boys' age groups, it applied for all four current age groups for the girls.

I cannot envision more talent dilution with yet another full USGDA, this time based geographically inside the beltway, but these are crazy times.

Maybe they receive only a U13 pilot USGDA program, but if it is a full girls academy, it will be the nail in the coffin of the three nearby ECNL clubs.

I also remember discussion on these boards that ECNL may slowly phase out over 5 years ...... hmmmmmmmm .....

TBH, I didn’t know how NSCL, ODSL worked or that EDP or ECNL even existed until last year.

Thats why it’s nice to see something like DCUM discussing this, but unfortunately the sub here is just sports and not only soccer. There is some good info in the huge threads but hard to sift through and find.

Thank you. The thread has been a nice one of late, and the focus on girls' developments is very helpful. The other big thread had too much going on with league debates and the fight over the future of US Soccer. There is a lot going on in girls soccer in the area, and a lot of posters in that thread did not like the discussions tracking all the youth soccer stuff on the girls side.

Newbies can search Part 1 of the main big thread for many answers to their basic questions.

I started this thread because of the boys vs girls comments on the "Travel Soccer teams around NOVA let's discuss Part I and II " threads hoping to allow those that didn't want to be confused or talk about the nuances of the girls side an outlet. so far. so good.. I think more threads would exacerbate the inability to find certain things as they get pushed back into the older threads.

I would like to see a thread on girls travel team tryouts. I remember when we started with our dd - very confusing(all the terms and acronyms), what to expect, rec coaches clueless or holding back so not lose the “better” girls, when are the tryouts, what are the clubs in the area, some clubs are bad in term of development, what to look for in a club, etc. Also good advice from people who have been through it.

Invite-only tryouts is not casting a wide-net. If anyone thinks the way the DA system is currently set-up is casting a wide-net, I want what their smoking.

First of all the purpose of DA is to create an integrated pyramid structure where clubs develop players organically from within and move the players up the pyramid and prepare them for high level professional and national team play.

One of the challenges in the DC area has been that there are lots of small to midsize clubs - many of whom have had success at the regional and national level, but the development of players has been secondary to building teams to win competitions.

There ultimately will not be 6-8 DA clubs in the DC area. There may end up being a total of 3-4 with feeder clubs at the younger ages. US Soccer will encourage clubs to merge or combine forces. Years ago, they tried to actually get the CCL clubs to all support 1 DA squad, but all of the coaching / TD egos prevented it.

As for will they just all play each other like CCL? Maybe a little bit at the younger ages where they are trying to limit travel, but not st the older ages. Yes, the 3-4 teams in the area will play each other but they will be in conferences aligned regionally and then play competition outside of the region at the two yearly showcase events.

This is terrible news... not everyone is going to make it to Pro level, and all this travel/rankings isn't required for college, they basically want fast, strong players. I'm pretty sure they would take a football player that decided he wanted to play soccer in college. However all this structure is setup to give parents and older kids a view that maybe they can make it.

BSC polled the membership and the overwhelming majority of members wanted to play high school, and were interested primarily in College recruiting, over national/international/professional play. Thus, the decision to stick with ECNL

I guess we will see whether Bethesda can continue to attract great players to play in the ECNL. I doubt they'll lose player #s overall. As indicated by the survey, most of the actual BSC members aren't looking beyond college and didn't want to trade the high school soccer team experience for the DA.

There will be a few holdouts in the ECNL who will be able to draw the top players(mainly urban areas), but nation wide the DA will win out. The few holdouts will be excluded from the tournaments and find it harder and harder find quality opponents to play(ie a lot more travel). This will drive the cost up. The college coaches will follow the DA. It’s just a matter of time.

Exactly, GDA was never about the hearts and minds of current Juniors and Seniors. The battle will be won with the crop of 06, 07 and 08 players.

Or even the current 04 and 05 players once parents begin comparing the lists of college coaches attending GDA showcases v ECNL events v (yawn) USYS events like the National League stuff, which seems to be the only place left for clubs outside of the DA and ECNL structure to go to try to get a look from college coaches.

04 attrition to GDA is probably about 50/50. I think 05 will be closer to 60/40 in favor of GDA. By 08/09 GDA will have between 80/20 - 70/30.

Hey, that is a qood question. If you are at McLean Soccer they are not going to tell you anything. They want players to try out for the ECNL later in Spring, not GDA. I bet it is the same at Bethesda.

There was this birth year switch 2 or 3 years ago and we were like the last to find out anything even though nearby clubs had websites about it.

This is something parents need to seek out for themselves. Forums like this are certainly an avenue for that. But no, generally clubs do not advertise other clubs tryouts and to expect that they would is naive.
