We moved to DC originally from upstate NY, and actually now currently live in Boston. As a pp said, they just don't have the equipment to deal with it. If it is 6-12", the impact will be for days. It will be very different from how Boston handles it, trust me!

Mthey are mistaken. It was never a non event. Models yesterday had it more in the 8-12 range and today seem to be back up on 12-16.

Where are you getting these high snow totals? I saw 2-5 inches on channel 4 news for the DC area.

On a weather app and one other news source on the internet. Not sure whose data they used.
Did not read in detail; only: Tuesday Wintry mix possible. Rain or snow.
It had changed again this morning on the weather app, got a winter storm watch notice.
However, I just saw one weather model posted here is also not enthusiastic about a major event, and says mix: rain/snow?
Which one is it now? Off to read more!

Depends on the school system. Larger school systems (FCPS) take longer to get all of the routes cleared/checked.

This. some of the farther reaches of the county have some very small, windy, rural-like roads. Those can stay treacherous for a while, even though if you live in McLean by Tysons everything seems fine.

No, they won't be. Unlike Boston, we simply don't have the equipment to remove large amounts of snow quickly. The temperatures on Wednesday will still be below freezing, so natural melting will not occur. Some winters we have a lot of snow, and other winters (like this one), we have little to none. It doesn't make sense to have the same budget for snow clean-up like Boston.

And also, unlike Boston, we have large county school systems where the amount of snow and clean-up can vary. It's not possible to open one part of a county's school and keep the other parts closed.
