This series is so stressful on every level in a wonderfully engaging way. It is dark too. I actually writhe in anticipation every time there is a car/driving scene-just expecting some horrific crash - and every interaction seems on the edge of some revelation. The kid characters are so well done - makes me look at the 'secret life' of my DD's peers differently!!!! I am skimming all these responses as I haven't read book and don't want to guess ahead of time what happens - and wish it was a much longer series though I would probably be a total nervous wreck if it went much longer.

Maybe its Maddie's daughter? she is the "pied piper" after all, super popular with all the kids wanting to be her and be around her, at least according to Maddie. Because of this no one would suspect her.

It has to be the twins, doesn't it? It seems too obvious, so maybe not. But their dad is always choking their mom, and Amabella got choked.

That's what I am thinking, its obvious but maybe that's fine. There are plenty of good books and what not that end up kind of obvious. I haven't read the book but I think its a strong probability that Perry is the rapist/Ziggy's dad. I feel like a lot of books in this genre sometimes go for the obvious. This is just really well done though!

I'm a pp who listed to the book on Audible a while ago so that I don't remember smaller details of the book. The book was very long (22 hours spoken) and much more detailed or meandering, maybe? (In fact at the time I wondered if it needed a good editor). But as I said, the narrator made the listen just so enjoyable but what seems "obvious" on the 7 series HBO version just wasn't so obvious in the book.

I also listened to the Audible version and I don't think the Celeste/Perry abuse was even revealed in the first half of the book.

I love how all the scenery is breathtakingly beautiful but always with a hint of danger to it. The high bridge in the opening sequence, the narrow and winding roads, the steep cliffs with rocks below.

OK thank you! I didn't read the book. This whole time I was wondering if they were garbling her name, its not super clear- not even when Laura Dern says it. For a long time I was wondering if her name was "Amberbella" which is possibly the most voltron-stripper name every concocted!

That reminds me, Laura Dern is another one who does such a great job with her character. All the seething that goes on just under the surface seems genuine in a almost creepy way. And their crazy, modern museum-looking house is so perfect.

Well Celeste is repressed, needs to cover up bruises and has been out of the workforce for 7 years. So maybe the suit and blouse were perfect for Celeste.
