I don't understand this unspoken (and sometimes explicitly spoken) notion that the DC schools chancellor should be black. DC's "Chocolate City" days are gone, and even if they weren't, the position that the largest racial group needs to be "represented" in the top job is, well, offensive. It's as if people said that because whites are the largest racial group in the U.S., the president and the secretary of state should never be other than white. It's true that there are some people who may believe that, and they're called bigots and racists. The principle should be no different with the Washington, DC government. It seems that most people want to hire the most talented, most accomplished leader for the job, not the one who's the "right" color. And it's not as if the Oakland, CA schools are anyone's model of a good, successful school system.
