Oh geez. Look, I think it was absolutely ridiculous for the U.S. To get involved in Vietnam. The toll there was horrific, if anyone is ever there I encourage you to check out the War Renembrance museum in HCMC. Very poignant. It's amazing that the country doesn't appear to harbor a great deal of ill will towards the U.S., I wouldn't blame them if they did.
That said, most of the U.S. soldiers who served were drafted. What were feasible alternative options for draftees besides having a legal deferment or moving to Canada? The soldiers were largely pawns in a larger game that they didn't control, and many vets are still suffering the consequences today.
Not to mention that, at least early on, most men really had no idea what they were getting themselves into or what it was like over there. Military commanders were boasting that it would be a short, victorious military effort.

But that said, Ron Paul was never sent to war, never saw combat, never faced the enemy, never went through any of what McCain did, never sacrificed as much, never suffered as much, either. His experience and McCains do not compare.

Well there's two discussions here. Is Donald Trump an asshole? Question # 1. And is John McCain a war hero? Question 2.
Trump's analysis is wrong and disrespectful because he asserts, as you say, that McCain is not a hero because he wasn't rambo.
However, I do not think McCain is a war hero because he participated in an unjust campaign that was unjust.
The logic of calling McCain a war hero is the same logic used to call confederate officers war heroes.
There is nothing heroic in taking up arms for an unjust cause.

Vietnam was was unjust. It wasn't a existential national security threat.
War is a tool to use to obtain a certain strategic outcome. If that strategic outcome is unjust, then participating or using the tool of war is unjust and therefore unheroic.
#2 is the reasoning that has the south waving stars and bars and have confederate statues and memorials everywhere.
