Not that poster (who is a jerk, obviously), but it's generally a really bad idea to give homeless people money. They just spend it to feed their drug habits, and you don't want to support that. Instead, duck into the Walgreens or whatever and buy some dog food and packaged people food.

In DC, I make a monthly donation to SOME, a homeless support group I have personal experience with and that I know does good work with the money it gets.

I thought the word gypsies was out and Roma was in? When we were in SF a few years ago we didn't have the exact same experience but, it was definately more homeless and really dirty around Berekley.
Roma is an actual ethnic group.

I'm as bleeding heart liberal as they come, and I never hand money directly to anyone. When I travel, I donate to a reputable organization ahead of time.
Many of the homeless-- the families who you don't see because the kids are in school and the adults are job hunting or working, for example-- aren't helped by street handouts. The mentally ill or addicted are also not helped by being handed cash.

I wouldn’t blame tech culture. Maybe they will help gentrify the filthy neighborhoods. It’s mind boggling why there are places like bayview and hunters point in such an expensive city.

If they are really hungry, then they could just eat the dogs. Very common in certain Asian countries you know.

That makes me so sad. It used to be a lovely place for anyone a little lost, little quirky, trying to find their way. The change started with the first tech bubble and never stopped. It breaks my heart, but I'm glad I left.

Were you in the part of the Haight near Golden Gate Park? That's where you get a lot of that. Also in Berkeley.

your change does not make change. giving directly to the homeless doesnt do anything to actually solve homelessness.
