I hate to hear this... we're headed out on a college trip later this afternoon and Oxy is on our list. Is anyone out there who has something good to say about the school? I can't believe with all of the supposed hordes of kids beating down the doors to get into decent colleges that it would be in trouble... But I never thought Sweet Briar would close either. So I obviously know very little. All I'm sure of is that if your child is female trying to get into a decent SLAC, you're (and she's) sh*t out of luck.

Eagle Rock and Highland Park are really eclectic neighborhoods, a lot of indigenous L.A. culture to explore there.

The pres got out of there the first chance he could. See also Crazy U.

Yeah, I know all about that. I was graduated from there. But we all call it "Oxy". Why are you saying don't call it "Oxy"?

I went to Oxy. I would never send my kids there now. Someone didn't do their homework. Just google all the problems it has had over the last decade as well as this choice tidbit yesterday. http://thepunditpress.com/2015/03/29/liberal-professor-if-you-understand-economics-you-are-likely-to-be-a-bad-person/. The faculty run the place. The President is useless. The Board has been chastised by the alums for letting the tenured faculty run the place. The rape culture madness has taken over the entire campus. The endowment was destroyed during the 80s Orange County real estate crush while Pomona's surged ahead and most of the alums I know have stopped giving anything to the school - the endowment is literally a fraction of its former competitor: Pomona. The neighborhood is definitely eclectic but not safe. The school is, however, good at marketing, but definitely not worth the money and all your child will get is disjointed very liberal artsy classes like "this history of the phallus in literature". Not . . worth . . the . . money. Especially if you are tacking on flight and travel costs from the east coast.

My DS is trying to decide between a bunch of SLAC's and two slightly bigger privates. If he gets a full merit scholarship at one (waiting to hear), that will be a big factor.

Be watchful and helpful with this - I, too, got into the school of my dreams, but I couldn't get loans and parents wouldn't pay. I then didn't take advantage of many opportunities provided by the cheaper school because I was so bitter about missing out on the other school. Just encourage her to take advantage of everything that UMd has to offer, and be watchful of slacking.

Can you share the stats for UC-Berkeley? It is DD's dream school....

Now it looks like Emory (was deciding between two schools). Will start on the Oxford campus, something that makes me very happy. She loves small environments and getting to know her professors, so it's really a great fit for her. Going down this weekend to do an admitted students day.

I love that she'll be in a more rural town, and when she goes to the main campus, it's more suburban. It's very 'her'. She's not a big city girl.

Awesome. If my DD ends up with those choices I'll be thrilled.

To the Johns Hopkins parent - would you be willing to share your child's stats? I'm visiting JHU on Thursday with my junior daughter.

Re: UMCP stats, my son (college junior) received a full ride Banneker Key scholarship with something like ten APs (all but one with scores of 5), SAT around 2250, and lots of Latin and clarinet extracurriculars.

I'm the FL and MS mom from above. My daughter considered that accelerated pre-med program at the suggestion of her own doctor. It's very competitive, but my daughter was a strong candidate. We did the informational visit and toured the facility. What a fantastic program! You start med school your junior year. She ultimately decided not to apply, but if your kid wants to be a physician it's really great!

Just keep in mind that it's extreamly hard to get a spot.

(Still hate the Gators! Go DAWGS!)

It's one of the Claremont schools. People who know anything about higher education know about Scripps.
