Subject: I am an atheist, ask me anything.
Do you believe that there are things that are intrinsically right (or wrong) ?
I ask because that's where I get stuck.
For me it is not so much the existence of a god that is crucial for meaning and purpose, rather the existence of some transcendent universal moral code that is not dependent on my whims or feelings (or anyone else's).
In the absence of this transcendent immutable moral code (kind of equivalent to the laws of physics but for morals), I find it hard to have a reference point against which to measure what's good or bad. In such a case, to me, the nihilistic position seems the most logical position, since nothing can now be said to be 'better' or have 'more value' than anything else.
For me, it does not even matter what the code is as long as I can believe in the existence of one true 'reference code' (even one that no human has ever dreamed of). Otherwise I feel like someone trying to measure the lenght of an object with a constantly changing measuring tape.
But then, once you believe in such a thing, you have already violated the 'no belief w/o proof' rule...and you might as well believe in a god that is the 'incarnation' of such moral code.
So there it is why I can't quite be an atheist ...

God doesn't mind science. Scientifically, an atheists or any humans existance hurts the environment . God gave his children souls and they are infinitely above the environment in priority.
If there is no god then the environment , a rock , a mouse , a cow or a tree is equal or greater in importance to any human.

How does believing in God give your life purpose? As I understand it, Christianity (the only religion I'm vaguely familiar with) is mainly about making sure you go to heaven when you die. And since Jesus forgives your sins, that's a done deal, right? So where's the sense of purpose?
As an atheist, I don't believe in an afterlife. The only thing that matters is this life, so it's pretty important to me to give it meaning and purpose. I also don't count on some invisible being to take care of the environment, animals, and my fellow man, so there's a few possible purposes right there.
As for the universe -- do you believe your God has domain over all of it, or just Earth? And if so, do you believe He has created life elsewhere?

Where do you draw your conclusions of atheists from? Surely not from actually interacting and having philosophical discussions with them.

OP here. I might not know anything. But to get to your second point, my code for life is to be a good citizen, because it works for the most part. I can not force anyone to live like I do, but mine seems to be a life of common sense. I have made mistakes, but no religion would have prevented most of them.

Yep. God did it. I believe in the corroborating historical abundance of evidence relating to Jesus. The shroud of Turin also amazes me with its inability to be explained. Those types of things sway me more than illogical mental midgets.
