I think that was also the situation when the Obama "clinging to their guns and God" comment came from.
Look, I get the privacy issues. It would be difficult to admit this "evidence" in court. But, his views are his views, he didn't try to deny that he was the one who said it or felt it, and it reflected poorly on the NBA - ie would have lost them money.

you are missing the point. you might say something in private that you might later reqret, or not even mean, and if it is taped illegally and released, it can destroy your livelihood? that seems unfair. try to ignore the subject matter and focus on the privacy aspects.
Why is everyone surprised by this? People who are public figures need to be damn careful about the things they say. Look at Mitt Romney and his comments about not caring about the 43 percent. It was a dumb thing to say, someone recorded it, and it tanked his campaign. If you say something stupid, you better be prepared to face the consequences.
By the way, I'm sure he'll manage to find a way to pay the bills. This nonsense about losing his "livelihood" is just a distraction.

It's not fair! How come Marion Barry gets to say all kinds of stuff, and the voters keep re-electing him, but when this basketball guy says some stuff, causing the NBA to potentially lose millions and millions and millions of dollars, the NBA shuts him down?

Well said. Sterling is offensive and obnoxious and the NBA is better without him. However, we should be wary of the slippery slope of eroding privacy here, where lovers' quarrels and pillow talk wind up on national TV.
