By far the worst pain I have ever experienced. I don't have kids either so I can't compare it to labor or anything. I was sweating, shaking and crying. So embarrassing but so miserable, too. Advil has been my best friend since I got it put in yesterday.

Barely felt it.

I had mine today - it was the worst experience I have ever had in my life, and I have a very high tolerance for pain. I told the doctor to stop and started screaming that I didn't want it anymore. She insisted that it was all done anyways. I vomited during the procedure, started sweating and felt like I was going to faint. I ordered a cab to pick me up. In the cab I started vomiting and shaking like crazy. I could not take the pain anymore and ended up calling for an ambulance in the taxi as we were stuck in traffic. Woman on the phone said it might take up to 60 min for the ambulance to reach where we are (this was in central London during rush hours). Taxi driver ended up taking me to the emergency room which was "10 min away" but felt more like 25. Worst minutes in my life, I was shaking in the car, vomiting and while I didn't faint (I have never fainted before) I felt unconscious, head down and closed eyes. I heard the taxi driver asking me questions but I could barely respond. They took me straight in to the emergency room as I could barely stand up and was completely gone. They gave me some hard core pain killers, and after about 1h I felt much better and could start functioning again.

I regretted inserting the corl every second after I did it but now, a few hours after I guess I'm happy I have it and don't have to worry about getting pregnant in the next 5 years. I'm 22 years old and I'm sure I will have it throughout the 5 years. I'm already dreading the day I need to take it out and I'm definitely NOT doing again in my life. I would not even recommend it to anyone after what I experienced, even though the experience seems to vary a lot.

Thought it would be quick and painless but it felt like 10,000 cramps all at once when it was first inserted.

After reading all of the comments on this thread, I was absolutely horrified about getting the Mirena inserted. I went into the OB this morning for my appointment, expecting absolutely horrible pain.

I took 800 mg of Ibuprofen about an hour before my appointment time. No numbing cream was used and they held it open with the metal speculum, before inserting. The insertion felt about twice as uncomfortable as a normal Pap smear - but it was bearable to me (occasional pinches, but nothing excruciating). The medication they put on to stop the bleeding stung quite a bit, but that sensation went away about 5 minutes after they completed the insertion. Afterwards, I had no cramps and was able to go about the rest of my day (when I had anticipated lots of sleep + resting).

I am 26 and have never been pregnant. It's been 7 hours since the insertion and, still, no cramps. I suppose the experience is different for everyone.

The procedure caused me a decent amount of pain- I was balling up my fists so tight I had ring imprints afterwards...in all it was over very quickly- about 10 minutes was the actual procedure and not prep. I thought it was excruciatingly painful as well. Interestingly, I had 2 c-sections and never dilated, so I wonder if this is why? In any event, I had my baby with me asleep in the stroller at the time and it was all I could do to not scream so as not to wake her. It was more painful than my c-sections and my ruptured ectopic pregnancy. I was totally unprepared for the amount of pain. I had bad cramping for a day, and more mild cramping for another couple of days. Then, I bled for 2 weeks EVERY 2 weeks for about 4 months, followed by intermittent spotting for a YEAR. I went back to the OB several times and she said that it happens for a small number of women. I've had it about 18 months now and I finally appreciate it. I think they're going to have to sedate me to remove it though.

Mirena is definitely a better option for those who've had a child, esp. soon after the birth. I'm on my 2nd mirena. 1st one put in a couple months after DD was born, not at all painful. 2nd put in 5 years later had some pain but not bad.

Worst pain EVER in my life. I couldn't finish the procedure. (No children and no cramps during cycle) I was literally in tears. I don't think I am going to attempt it again.

just had mine inserted today. It wasnt the most comfortable thing, insertion felt like quick pinching and some cramping afterward but Im fine now....mild cramping did not last long

I will say DIDO to exactly what you just wrote. Never went through labour, no advil recomended and I would say it was by far the worst pain I have felt. I have had multiple knee surgerys and other injuerys, still doesn't compare. Gonna give it a chance though, make it all worth while.

I was terrified after reading the comments on this page to get the Mirena. Just left the doctors office and can honestly say I felt nothing more than as if I was getting a Pap smear. I did take a Vicodin 40 minutes before and I've had one vaginal child birth so that could have helped. So far just barely feeling some slight cramps and that's all.

YAY I DID IT - AND IF I CAN DO IT ANYONE CAN!! I took 2 Mybulen 45 minutes beforehand (not sure if this helped - perhaps just a coincidence). Do yourself a favour and make sure you are nice and warm - My gynae gives his patients a nice fluffy gown and I kept my cami and cardi on underneath. I even wore my mohair socks to feel more comfortable. Also, pack yourself a bag with your lady comforts, and feminine hygiene products as extra peace of mind. My gynae was absolutely excellent - he talked me through every step of the process. If you live in South Africa I can highly recommend him. I would say the pain wasn't even as bad as the scraping sensation experienced with a pap smear. It was just like someone inducing cramps by pressing on my tummy. He warned me when I would experience the sharp pains which were a few seconds long, but totally bearable for someone used to having bad cramps (I once had my period for 45 days solid - need I say more!) Trust me, I am the most squeamish and anxious person around so if I can do it so can you. I didn't even feel nauseas or light-headed afterwards, nor any pain or bleeding. I left feeling better than I did when I arrived! I was told to wait two weeks until my man and I can have unprotected intercourse. Good Luck ladies!!

I'm going to have mine inserted today and am quite nervous. I have been advised to take Ibuprofen beforehand. I have to do it! Will see how it goes ...
